Heh, I was only pointing out that 'jragon' is a fool! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If Deus Ex is cheesy, give me a lifetime supply of cheese wheels. This jragon seems to be..."uninformed." I won't call him stupid, and I certainly won't agree with above posters that he "needs to die," but I classify him as one of the many types of people who don't give something an honest try before slamming it.
*sigh*
He insists that the AI is "****", and he constantly insists that the AI from the time from the "wicked" console games was "pwnage" and "owned the **** AI from Deus Ex". Of course, because Deus Ex was released on Playstation, it should have had wicked AI. I mean consoles are the best aren't they dear?
He also insists that the game's atmosphere is ****. He compares it to Unreal Tournament, apperntly the graphics are the same, they walk the same, the hud looks similar and alot more... well this amazing... who would have known? It couldn't be because the same engine could it? Nah impossible... Of course, the gritty, dark, realistic atmosphere is rubbish isn't it. All of that attention to detail is rubbish. The people infected virtually "rotting" in the streets, hanging round fires. Carboard shacks with dirty matresses, drug syringes and alchohol bottles lying on the floor... NPC's begging you for money as you walk around... Yeh, rubbish isn't it?
It was decent for its time. By today's standards, yeah, it sucked.

I hate to say it, but even by the standards THEN it sucked.
The AI simply runs towards you until it is in weapon range, then proceeds to fire at you until you die. Oh, and sometimes it is capable of such amazing feats as "running towards you and shooting" and "running sideways and shooting" but these were pretty much done at random (except the bosses who just strafe like crazy). Oh, and when they reach a certain preset health level they put their weapons away and run. They don't regroup, they just run forever until you kill them. Even Half-life had better AI. *disclaimer* Half-life's AI was ground-breaking for the time, i'm just saying Deus Ex was released later and had far worse AI. *edit*
Despite my bashings, Deus Ex WAS an awesome game, I just tend not to think of it as an FPS, but as an RPG which just HAPPENS to be played in a first-person perspective. And RPGs don't need good AI <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I'll never forget my fondest memory of any AI related experience: I was swimming around. Some NSF guard saw me, jumped into the water, and pulled a knife. I whacked him a bit with a baton, causing him to sheath his knife and swim away. Into the sea. I'll always remember the lone NSF guard swimming as fast as possible into the dark night, away from civilization.
Or when an AI bad guy pulled a stealth pistol to kill a helpless civilian: he strafed left and right, firing wildly, hitting one out of every 6 shots. The helpless civilian simply cowered, taking shot after shot without moving. Odd...
But Deus Ex is my favorite single player game and second favorite overall.

For me, part of DX's charm was the quirky, yet functional, AI. Mixing up quest items and doing things in weird orders to make the faction system break was always great fun. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
They're also the only enemies in any singleplayer fps ever to actually be able to run out of ammo. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Why exactly are we holding an argument against someone who isn't even <i>here</i>?

Who cares? It's a chance to talk about Deus Ex, and that's always a good thing.
To keep this going, DX multiplay... did anyone play it? I tried it once - got AWPed 5 times in a row as soon as I spawned and left, never to return again. Now I'm curious about it. Is it any good? Maybe we could get a community game going, it can't be worse than CS.

Its netcode isn't as polished as most of today's games because multiplayer was, quite literally, patched on. Think in terms of the original Unreal Tournament's netcode.
In terms of actual gameplay, the augmentation system allowed for superb customization by personal style. In many ways I'd compare it to Jedi Knight 1's multiplayer (augs instead of force powers), which is a major compliment coming from me.
Tons of strats to try out were even given in the readme. One of the most unexpected I read was to take the EMP shield, remote drone, arm strength enhancers, and short range/melee weapons skills. Find any common weapon, search for an enemy, turn all augmentations on, run at them headfirst both physically and with your summoned drone, explode the drone in his face (draining all of his battery power for augs while doing little damage to yourself because of your EMP shield) and finally close in for the kill on a surprized enemy unable to use any aug powers.
I can't imagine how awesome a team game would be over today's broadband connections, much less over LAN.
