I'd love to get a good 5.1 speaker system (since I got a 5.1 card...) but I just don't have anywhere to put the speakers.. plus my PC is off in the corner so that wouldn't make it sound right at all. And I don't want no speaker stands I'd end up kicking over...

So both Valve and id recommend ATI ? Hmm.

Anyway, I've just moved house, and I'm now next door to an old lady. My computer room shares a wall with hers, so no late night, max volume fragging for me.

    Meh

    Yes I said Meh!

Because there are a load of other games I'd much prefer to play, like Evil Genius and Half-Life 2 for starters.

I'm pretty sure I have a coverdisc with a promo NVIDIA/Doom3 movie on it. One of those "how it's meant to be played" thingers.

When was the last time you saw a game that didn't have that "The way it's meant to be played" thing? It means nothing.

Surely it means NVIDIA are paying id to say nice things about them - if that's the case they wouldn't be all "get ATI"

But that's exactly what they have said if these quotes are true - recommended graphics card: ATI.

Don't you mean 'I pity da foo who first tries to link their achievements'?

Hehe, funny thing is I only saw one of those Mr. T things....ah well, that's because I'm cut off from TV :/

Funny how I'm just at minimum requirements though. Looks like I won't need to do anything for my video cards unless I want to have the "OMG LOOKING PWN!" graphics.

Lol? You must have a radeon 9800 to play at the recommend.. Minimum specs are probably the most bare minimum they can squize out of their super clocked GPU <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

On a Doom 3 benchmark, just the Radeon 9700 Pro 128 MB ran it at average 60 fps on medium detail at 1024x768 (I always play at that resolution anyways, never higher...) with a Pentium 3.06 ghz. So having a good processor helps. The 9800 (non-pro I think) 128 MB gets average of about 70 fps with the same system and detail, but I'm sure it depends less on processor than the 9700 does.

On a similar note, I really need to upgrade. I don't think the old Radeon 8500 and 1.4 ghz is gonna get me through Doom 3.

I'll probably wait until some demos come out or theres some reviews of the X-box co-op mode before I decide...It looks really good, but then again so did Quake 3... can't stand quake 3. Anyway, I really like co-op. So it's gonna rest on that for me.

With a good 9 frames per second. Just because a game includes insanely high max settings doesnt mean any computer today can run it like that. Especially when you consider games like this.

Ha, I thought the same, until i found out that the USK (blessed be their mousepads) rated it as USK-18, which means that it <i>can't</i> be indicted. It can't be sold to minors, but then, I'm 20, so that's no problem. Adding to the joy, Activision is releasing the English uncut version over here. I'm feeling quite cuddly right now.

It's a shame when one year old computer barely meets the mininial specs for Doom3. I've got 2.79GHz processor, good amount of RAM, more virtual memory than the law allows, but a GeForce 4 MX processor! O'well. Hopefully they'll be a demo so I see how my computer takes it. If it can, <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

It's a little more complex than that, and since nobody can stop me, I'm going to tell you:

After the tragedy of Erfurt (for those with short memories: A school-shooting with more victims than Littleton.) politicians demanded harsher regulations on computer games. Let's don't go into the futility of that movement, they simply did.
After some discussion between our chancelor and the game industrys lobby (thankfully a comparably big employer over here), this resulted in a strengthening of the USK, an independent gremium comparable to the ERSB. Since then, all games have to be rated by the USK before they can be sold in Germany (which leads to some ridiculous fallout, such as pre-USK games (p.e. Mario Kart) being technically illegal, not that anyone would care). In exchange, a game rated positively by the USK can not be indicted anymore.
Now, here comes the good part: The USK is staffed by gamers not much older than you or me. They do, quite naturally, not apply half as mean standards as the BPjM. Thus, indiction has become a by far less likely danger around here. It still happens on occasion (ironically, the German game Far Cry was being rated negatively in its uncut version), but generally, access to action games is easier.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->wolfenstein wasnt released in germany either was it? thats killing zombies also. maybe they have a thing againts killing the undead. or nazis...<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The uncut Wolfensteins are forbidden over here. Not indicted for 'youth protection', forbidden. This has got to do with the general ban of Nazi symbolism in German media unless they are of 'educational purpose'. Now, in case of TV or books, the law is applied in dubio pro reo, which means that it's assumed that even an Indiana Jones movie is produced for the purpose of education unless proven otherwise. Games do sadly not enjoy the same luxury.
