<div class="IPBDescription">fix the squads a bit....</div> Does my chair bug or is it really that you cant have same man in 2 groups`?

I usually play in public and often I do comm and i have the normal problem disobediance, solution i put all my rines to Sqd. 1 and usuallt one or two goes to wp.

Problem comes when i have those guys who really listen, I would like to put them in both sqds. but when i put them eg. in sqd. 2 I lose the whole first group?

So is it only me or is this really bug or something?

Try CTRL + selection, and SHIFT + selection.

Managing two groups is just too much trouble for me. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I don't recall exactly where, but there was talk that the commander's interface has that particularly counter-intuitive design as a way to balance the game. After all, if you could answer medpack or ammo requests by hitting one key, that would be overpowered.

    You can. Spacebar. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just nothing else (Building/research complete, under attack, etc.) can come in between the request and your spacebar.

Yeah I'm a complete newb at RTS style gaming, but when I'm forced to hop in, I know that I can keep most people happy as long as I spam the space bar and drop people things.

"Press your jump key to go to the alert!" :D

you can double assign the jump button.. leave the one on your mouse button, and give the secondary jump on your shift... shift works well for me

You just look for the person who is doing the good job then click him or selection both of them by clicking and holding left mouse button. Then the Ctrl + 1,2,3,4,5. And you can guess how to make the bad group the lower squad and keep the good group in the higher squad.

I never use squads anyway. Who has time to go grabbing squares when you're building stuff? Picking out specific people to do stuff is what voice comm is for.

On the subject of comm squads and their needing fixing...

Coulden't Flay or Voogru or whoever is doing the coding now add in something to make comm groups more noticable?

i.e. have different playermodels for each squad, so for example when a group of rines is set to squad one, their chest armor turns green, or gets a big "1" on top of it, so you know where and who your squad groups are.

This would certainly help, I think they changed the color of the guys inthe minimap or something, but that's just way too much work, espically in an uncoordinated pub server.

Has this ever been suggested before? Or thought about? I've always wonderd abotu this.

im not that good enough for commanding tho, i never get to where i have a HA train (useually tho there too stupid to make the proto lab!)

I'm not certain why Squads exist. Most RTS games do support grouping, but the grouping has no effect on individual units other than to allow you to select them quickly. In this case, there's no need for marines to know what squad they're in, much less limit marines to only belong to one squad.

On the other hand, Squads may have been an effort to move towards a basic command hierarchy, where Squads would have leaders that take the burden off the commander and order their squadmates around. I'm certain you would agree that the commander cannot keep track of 15 marines in a 16 vs 16 game.

As for my previous post, pressing the jump button isn't what I had in mind. Pressing the jump button shifts your view, making you lose focus on what you were doing. If the commander trusts the marines enough to drop medpacks without checking on them, then he shouldn't be punished in this way.

Doesn't matter as marines dominate a game that huge.

    "Kornamander, gimme ammo!"
    "Comm, I want a green shirty thingy!!!!111"

    :\

Still, asside from the vanity that would be induced amoung the more feminine of the TSA forces, it's not a bad idea. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Personally I love squads; if you dont use them for players, they are a life-saver for quick access to your obs and al. Still, I always have all rines in sqd 1, then the uber-l33t rine that joins gets his own squad in 2/3 for game-critical operations. Having him in the "all rines" squad would be useful too; "ALL RINES BASE BASE BASE!" shouts are all too common, and it's equally common for them to be ignored.

Leaders for individual squads who get some privilage (a new impulse to give their squadies basic wp, amoungst other stuff,) has been suggested many times before. Its usefulness is questionable, but it may be worth a try.

If you select a squad or individual marine, hold your duck key and voice key and speak into the mic, only they will hear it. This feature has been in for a while but it's kind of pointless considering the fast pace nature of NS and the fact that you're only generally going to be talking to less than 10 people anyway, and they can probably figure out who you're talking to.
  • SaltzBadSaltzBad Join Date: 2004-02-23 Member: 26833Members
Its a pretty nice feature actually, because you can talk a whole game long without others complaining about not being able to hear Skulks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
