I only need a co_map which you can open with the editor and which you can play with NS. Thats all I need. Thats the best tutorial for me. Please can anyone send me ANY co_map I can open with the Editor and play with NS!!!! Or give ma a link to a dl-side.
I think this map should be a lot more detailed and atmospheric, after all this isn't an MP map so the normal limits need not apply, and also a new player will get right into the game if the first map they play is this and it oozes atmosphere.
Maybe you should have it as some kind of setting, like a ship or something, better then row after row of glass cabinets.
Yeah. See first post though. I really did intend to send it on to someone who knows how to make nice-looking stuff when I run out of things to add. Although players might not appreciate a map filled with so much detail, so that they rarely get above 20 fps...
I also think it could look nicer, hard to be "specific" as you say.
Try more interesting architecture, more interesting and contrasting lighting... ..If there's a Kharaa section, get some infestation in there.
Align, you need to get back, I havent gotten crap done on the map. I've been working and have had no time for it. Ive only been getting like 5 hours of computer time in a week lately. and after shoveling 12 cubic yards of cement the last thing i wanted to do with my comp time is load up your map. you or someone else needs to take it, im too busy.
Make it like the Op. Force boot camp... That was a great deal of fun first time i played it... I got inspired to play the game
seems to me their be two cool locals to have the training course exist in, A) the training rooms from hail frontiersmen (is that the right name?) or since that may well prove impossible as that would require a lot of custom work, maybe a transport enroute to a mission. i kinda think more atmospheric training and less cold muesem *spelling?* but that is of course up to the maker(s)
and now behold the majestic onos in its native habitat, mauling a defenseless civilian ship captain.
I'm just waiting for keef to send the .rmf so I can continue on it. I sent him a PM, so he shouldn't be able to miss it, as long as he gets on the forums...
if this project is dead... I'll try to do whatever needs done to it...
I'm a so so mapper... not great, but I can do basic stuff and add in whatevers needed (biggest prob for me is inspiration so )
ill lend my services to spruce up the look of it if ur interested (co_teabag author)... seeing as lag isnt really an issue, u culd hav some beautifully detailed triggered doors, snazzy lighting fx, complex architecture... i mean if ur gonna do somethin like this u may as well do it properlly so they could consider it as an official
im curious how ur going to teach comm mode in this map, unless u hav some sorta textures which r only viewable from the comm chair, saying stuff like "drop armoury here" and u culd obviously use game_text and voice overs to describe wat the chair is for etc
When I initially got back from the trip I was really in a mapping mood, but since I didn't have keefs .rmf at the time I couldn't do any work. When we finally sorted out the problems, and I had the .rmf, I really really did not feel like mapping anymore. Not sure why. Keef has made rather nice progress, and included stuff I wouldn't have thought of myself, but it doesn't feel like my map anymore. Maybe I'm not that type.
Meat, I wasn't going to have the commanding in this map, since it would presumably require a lot more entities. In any case, I'll post a download link to the .rmf in a while.
http://www.angelfire.com/games5/align1/ForNubs.zip You have to copy & paste it. Makes you wonder why they bother...

bah, 99% of ppl culd go up to 2000 b4 noticing even a slight drop in framerate but lets not get into this argument as ur only gonna end up regurgatating the mapping guidelines to me besides, the average joe ns player doesnt care about whether r speeds go over the 800 mark as long as it looks nice and runs smoothly and this is only a training map for new players, it should be enticing to draw them into the game
maybe i can help ya out? if theres any mapping or somethin, let me know

ok ive just had a look at the rmf and we may as well start from scratch with the architecture, lots of overlapping brushes, corridors built with the cylinder tool, sorry but its not pretty
... im thinkin, start with a fade in from black into ur crews quarters on a space craft of some sort with alarms blazing, lights flashing and what not. then hav someone say over the ships tannoy somethin like "infestation iminent, suit up and haul **** soldier" (oh i dunno, im not a writer ), then maybe some game text telling u to locate some heavy armour, pick up a gun, and proceed to the armoury for ammo and healing.
then have it so ur givin a waypoint (if thats possible) to the area of trouble which ull hav to pass down some pretty dark atmospheric corridors to get too with some random noises and jumpy steam bits/explosions on the way to raise the tension. u then get there and hav somethin like growing infestation block the players path, so they hav to weld open a new route. then when they get to the main room, the voice is shouting orders to get a turret fac, sieges and radar built to destroy the hive and OC's in the adjacent room... at which point the voice says "congratulations uv completed the basic simulated field training" or some guff, the end. whadya think?
certainly beats just looking at objects behind glass, i mean why not just read the manual ffs
edit: lol just realised half the map was hidden with the hide tool, ill compile and play it b4 i pass any further comments, culdnt help noticing uv been leaving each other notes in the multimanagers though, lol
hmm... it seems that I keep trying to post and it not going up XD
I say again, if it has posted up before, I offer my services...
It seems that the room itself needs redone...
If you like, tomorrow I can whip up a quick room for ya...
I am not sure if ai can add in all the doodad's needed (I may be able to... I've never tried adding playermodels and items/weapons to the level before... 0o')
sorry, but this does need remaking, ill get something down on paper tonight and post it here tmmrw, but its gonna be along the same vein as the first level of halo which is basically a training level but it wont be as basic and should cover everything, including simple comm chair tasks like dropping a TF, turrets then upgrading to siege, sound good? or do ppl generally want a showcase style level like theyve sorta made
concept.... sorry bout my drawing/writing capabilities, its been a while :S but whadya reckon, worth doing? any suggestions?
p.s u start at the bottom and try to follow the arrows
Talk to keef. The original map was pretty much from the wall_lab corridor and the elevator up from there. What's selected in this picture essentially. And yes meat, the idea you sent to me by email(doing it like the Halo beginning) would be a lot nicer, but there are no NPCs in NS. And no mouth animations(like for voicecomm). Using ordinary scientists would be incredibly corny, if you ask me.
By the way, how come you two voice dudes never sent me any .wavs? Meh, doesn't matter now.
the voice wuld come over a tannoy, like the ships P.A or somethin, as far as i can see everything there is do-able except for the fact, if ur gonna auto join a marine team, theres no aliens to trigger the game start, and does that mean things like offense chambers wont actually start working until the game does start?
but as Align said we do need a good voice actor, prefereably over 18 so it doesnt sound like your being ordered around by a prepubescent teen either. id do it myself but i got the mapping to get on with, reckon ill hav it done in about a week
