Need A Webhost...

<div class="IPBDescription">what works best?</div> I'm looking for a bare minimum free webhost, just something I can post pictures and do basic file transfers with. Conditions:
1) Fairly reliable, won't delete my stuff without warning when my limit is no where near full, will be accessable all the time.
2) Free, I have no income and a monthly cost will add up really quick.
3) Adds don't matter, as long as there is no pr0n, it's not like I intend to draw lots of traffic anyways.
4) A decent ammount of storage space, hopefully nothing lower than 20mb
5) Domain doesn't matter, I won't lose it, and I don't care what people who might happen to be browsing think about it.

There are hundreds of offers availible via google, but I'm a little wary of just grabbing something, if you have hosting, what works for you?

Every ISP (including AOL) has given their users webspace for years, yet for some reason people don't remember. So unless your on a college LAN or interweb cafe, use your ISP. If your ISP doesn't offer any webspace, tell them to get out of the stone age and switch to a different one.

Yeah.. doom is right, if you have an ISP that is not college/work based you will have webspace. Thusly you will be able to have probably close to 50MB... at least that is what most ISP's offer in my area. It may vary, but I would check with them first.. then if needed go to a free one. 50megsfree comes to mind.. but they like to have lots of ads. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I would say it would be just as safe as your internet connection is of staying stable. Usually that is the only issue ISP's have. If you have ISP issues. they probably aren't the best ISP to begin with.

As for getting access, you could call them and ask how to get access. I know Midco (cable company here) just requires you use an FTP program, aka cuteFTP/IE/Etc to upload your images. Usually your username to log onto the ISP is the domain name, for example when I had Mico mine was windsiren.sio.mido.net. Then whatever your email password is for the ISP, assuming you have email with the ISP. :-)

I'm on Telus. Their webhosting is reliable, but you get 10MB only, and about 50-100MB transfer. In other words, its pretty much crap. I used to use it but kept getting cut off for using too much bandwidth (they don't say there's a limit but there is). However, I didn't expect much from them since it took them 9 months and 14 tries to update our ADSL plan (they kept adding more of the wrong package, and not removing the old ones).

    --Edit--
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->  I would say it would be just as safe as your internet connection is of staying stable. They're horribly unreliable (its amazing to go three weeks without having at least 24 hours of outages). They're the worst ISP I've ever been with, but unfortunately I have no choice. Its either Telus or Shaw Cable, and seeing as how Shaw is hideously expensive unless you subscribe to their regular cable too (which I don't)... no choice really.

Can't say I'm entirely suprized... They have a reputation for crappy service, although I MYSELF haven't had too much problems with them.

I'm thinking 50megfree would be a good option, can anyone give me a quick review how good they acctually are?

I doubt it, they were giving it out free as a 'grand opening in North America' promotion.

Do you have an old computer that you don't use anymore? If so, you can download Apache or something and host your own webspace. The storage space is as big as your hard drive, your transfer is as much as your bandwith and you can control the uptime and extras (MySQL, PHP...). Try it. Your web address will be your IP. If you dont want to type in an IP every time, got www.dot.tk for some free URL redirection like "www.yoursite.tk". I know this sounds lie a lot, but it should be worth it.

    Hope this helps. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If you can't find anything else you like, I've got plenty of space and bandwidth to share as long as you're not a thorn.

There's about 5 bagillion ways to contact me on my profile.

Skidzor has a good idea. But it all depends if you have a secondary computer and a decent upload capacity. Of course, your ISP doesn't sound too reliable...

Highspeed internet is cheap here in canada.

    Around $30 a month for a 4mbit connection.

I pay $60 a month for a 5mbit, but it has "unlimited" transfer.
