what to do?
ok i´ve seen this at many demo´s. Im pretty sure that clan palyers use TeamSpeak. But...they also write things like for example "marine at Topo". Now when should I use my mic and when should i write? Why typing? Talking into your voice com is much faster. Don't missunderstand me plz...I just want to become better and perhaps a calnplayer could tell me why they do this.

typing is only when your voice is crap or when you also said it over voice. Kind of extra to make sure it gets through
Voice for important GAME matters
example : Fade eating phase at eclipse
Type for idle banter
example : HAHA NICE SHOT, redemp that beoch!
I don't know about clan play, but thats how I do things.. lol
I only use voice briefly, if what im about to say really matters, but to each his pwn.
Cheese, I think you misinterpreted what was happening. The text was most likely from a script. Most clan players have scripted keys for meds/ammo/need order/etc., that perform the impulse and team say it. You should always use voice comm when you need to inform the team of something relating to the game. Just make it quick and to the point.
Typing is clearer, but needs the time..
Voice is FAST, but if you don't speak clear english (language of the ppl) then it won't help anyway.
Both can be unclear because a lot of ppl type things or say things....gets pretty messy sometimes O.o
If they write is because:
1. They havent got mic
2. They need silence, for example at the beginning of the game
3. They have enough time to write
However. Stuttering, mumbling, or bad microphone placement (too far/too close to your mouth), or just having a voice that people make fun of to settle their own insecurities ruins it.
So unless you can enunciate your words, speak loud enough to be heard without being too loud, and practice good microphone discipline, using a microphone will be a painful experience of people laughing at you and muting you.
But text is too slow.
If you really need something, be short and precise about it on the microphone, because typing just sucks. Flashing your light on and off for attention also works. This is what I do when I need welding.
Just clear your throat a lot when people aren't listening and try to pronounce each word. We all mumble like gamers, but sometimes I can't even make out what you guys are saying. Let people know if their microphone sucks. Put up with annoying voices if they're giving you information. Mute is a tool of last resort meant for people abusing the mic, and IMO it should be temporary, since it's so easy in the first place.
Try not to get excited when you talk into the mic. Just don't. You sound more like an idiot than usual when you're flustered. Calm down for a second, then press the button.
If you're running a team you might find it easier if, say, "sarges" and the Comm use voice chat only, and everyone else types... or speech only for hurried chatter while you're being bushwhacked.
If you sound like an obvious pre-teen then you really need to invest in good typing fingers - virtually NOONE will respect you. Thats the way life is.
Second, if every noob with a mike is screaming profanities or gibberish, then you NEED to type because noone will be able to make out what you're saying.
In WELL ORGANISED TEAMS I suggest voicecomm all the time.
On pubs, I'd suggest a combination, but would favour text more. People SEE text, they know the comm is giving orders, and as comm you should have more than enough time to squeeze in a quick comment. Master the art of battle chat. This is a refined version of 1337 that is easily readable and has a clear meaning.
"omfgbaserape def def spawn now omgkthx guyz gg F4" is BAD.
"Get to Marine Spawn, we're being attacked by 4 fades and an onos, they've got cloaking, adrenaline, and regeneration, we need to get some defence up or its game over" is too long and mostly nonessential.
"Defend spawn, hurry" is about right.
Make good use of NS slang, that'll cut your typing down. Don't explain unless you HAVE to - most other marines will be able to type "MS is Marine Spawn dude", so you don't have to worry about it unless the team is seriously green.
You can take your time over voice comm, but try to stay calm, don't get too high pitched, and bear in mind that if you're losing it over the voice comm then your team are going to think you're woefully inept. If you're calm and controlled, they'll be calm and controlled. Dish out some support and let them think they know whats going on and it'll pay dividends for you.
"rt" and maybe a "standing by" using the radial/bind will take you all of 1 second and not deafen everyone else.
What you want to say can usually be summed up in one word, and your location will even be shown along side it. "vent" or "fade" or "med" is plenty. You will spend more time trying to explain where you are over voice than typing it.
Then there are the ones of us who are unlucky, and doing too many things at once while using voice will crash HL. Firing, jumping, moving, and talking will do it. It's mainly a bandwidth issue, as the setting that would prevent the crash make your performance when not talking still suck.
some ppl use typing for the msg to be shown to ppl for longer, instead of a few seconds of strange gurgling sounds...
Sadly, there is no cure to that yet, so I can only recommend kick/ban/torture.
Speech = Info that concerns the whole team, like if there is skulks in ceiling/location.
Type = Chatter. If I hear someone chatting constantly, or playing music thought the mic, MUTE right away.
tpying is my methord of comm but voice is far better if u can stand listening to the people on the other end. personally i use Teamspeak for clan games ect but i cant bring my self to listen to my clan mates some times. E.g yahooserious when hes drunk. a stoned dutch man singing is some thing which can scar u for life.
first i try to explain the game a bit to them, just to make sure it isnt a newbie. if the player isnt a newb, i threaten them basically. usually it starts with no toys. then its we will loose this game and it will be all your fault. then if they still dont listen i use my rcon to say i will kick people that dont contribute to their team.
if they still keep ignoring the commander and running off to west when he wants the player in sat, then he gets kicked. if he comes back and does it again. 1 day ban. sure its a bit harse to do this to people (after all they might not speak english) but it stops 1 player ruining the game for the rest of the team.
i also use this system for aliens who just walk around till they have 99 res. first i try to explain to them how to use the res. most of the time its a newbie that just isnt really sure how to play. but if the player clearly isnt a newbie, then thats also a kick, followed by a 1 day ban if the stunt is repeated.
Overall I think voice is a great thing since there are some things you just can't have bound all the time (Holy **** the entire team just got focus and cloaking comes to mind). Some people think voice communication is jesus which is, at least in my opinion, an exaggeration. Remember your roots? bind F1 "messagemode2 Incoming from ramp1 to ramp2!!!"
Say you want to bind q to "orders/rt com"
It would be in console: bind q "say_team orders/rt com"
Not that hard is it?
Say you want to bind j to "you suck alien"
Bind j "say you suck alien"
Very simple, you can find out how to bind other stuff on your own. For bunny-hopping, bind your mwheel up to +jump.
As for voice com, I don't use it unless i'm com, otherwise my binded keys cover most areas. However, keep in mind that some people's sound cards suck and they can hear you that well.
BTW, if you have an annoyning voice, don't use voice com PLZ
Here a situations where I use typing:
When my mic is not at home/plugged in.
When I'm not convinced my message got across over voice
When there is a lot of other communication and I want to share some detail while others are talking (my detail is not as important as someone else's)
When I use Voice:
When I need to communicate something quickly... (FADE INCOMING TO BASE)
when I'm in the middle of a fire fight and need to keep my hands on the keyboard for battle
When giving squad orders, "So and so move into that corner"
But I use a combination of Voice and typing in pretty much every game..
In a related note, I'm getting rather disgusted with game developers. Very few new game releases are implementing simple and effective built-in voice communication systems despite valve having patched this into HL several years ago. Voice comm can help almost any game, no matter what the genre. Even MMORPG's can benefit from party-based VC systems.
But I digress.

Its great if you want to ask for orders/meds/ammo from a scripted key, but do the comm a favor and also include the impulse in your bind.

Haha, yeah nothing sucks more than a guy calling for meds without the impulse on a 24 player server.
