or: how to deal with OJ in keyboard...
yes, I just spilled a full cup of OJ into my wireless keyboard. my guess is that it's ruined, but anyway, what is the best protocol for when such things happen? I turned it over and left it to dry itself out over the sink...

at least this isn't as bad as last summer, when I spilled a full cup of hot chocolate into a laptop...

I've heard alchohol wipes are good for cleaning the computer in general (exterior)

If it was a logitech the worst thing you can do is turn it over. If you remove some keys you will see how it works, it's hard to explain. Anyway, I spilled coke over a keyboard once and it started acting really weird, pressing a would would type b and stuff like that. I opened it up and found alot of dryed coke that probably was short circuiting it. I managed to rub it clean and luckily it started working normally. Only thing was that some keys kind of cracked and some got stucked easily.

it actually IS a logitech =P but why is that bad? I would think OJ sitting in the wells of the keys would be better than it seeping into the circuitry...

maybe I will try to dissect it if it doesn't work when it dries... more likely though, I'll just get a cheap new keyboard... I wasn't crazy about the wireless anyway

Mine's not wireless, but about a week ago I took it apart and cleaned about 2 years worth of crap out of it... looks practically new now.

Popped out the keys with a screwdriver and washed them in soapy water. Then unscrewed the casing and took the front plate and washed it separately, using q-tips to get in between the keys and soapy water as well. I had no trouble putting it back together - just make sure you know where everything goes as you take it apart.

    Yeah I'm a cheapskate...

What i do is i take my keyboard apart and there will be like a white thing inside. Wipe it down with some warm soapy water then let it dry. Clean the keys then put the keyboard back togther again. After a while it should be back to normal.

rubbing alcohol works significantly better than soapy water, and it dries quickly

For some strange reason, I don't think you'd want to drink rubbing alcohol. And honestly, I don't think it really has many uses outside lighting stuff on fire and cleaning (usually).

Well, some people drink Meths so I'm sure someone will try out the cleaning stuff if they are desparate.

EDIT: Just done a lil research and found that meths isn't suitable as a beverage. People still drink it anyway...

if you spill anything on your keyboard and its a very spreadable liquid, immediately unplug [lose the power] and take it outside, holding it upside down. then get a hose or something and spray it for a while so all the filthy sticky drink is gone, and then just put it up side down out side in the sun somewhere so it drains.

after that, you'll want to test it... if it works fine, unplug it, take it outside, and clean the whole thing down, key by key... disassemble it and wipe it

Or.. you can buy a new keyboard for $5 :-)

That is what I would have done.. and have done before.

    Not joking:

My keyboard just messed up there. The keys were jamming and there was a lot of crap in it in general. I unscrewed the top, took it upstairs and scrubbed it clean, rinsed it then dried it with a hair drier. Works brilliantly now,

I spilled Pepsi on the Keyboard once, nothing happened, but an hour later X, C and V stopped working, I took it apart to clean it and got all the Pepsi off, put it back together and it refused to work. It was a Logitec keyboard. The Mouse it came with stopped working for no reason soon after.

I don't know what The Right Thing™ is to do, but I'd pull all the keys off and clean it with a damp cloth. I wouldn't immerse it in water or scrub it. I'd get use as little liquid as possible.

I unscrewed my keyboard and the part I cleaned had absolutely no electronics on it. so I was able to drown it. Man, now that it's morning I've noticed the thing is shining! Couldn't water still get into keyboard if you used the method you described?

Yes. The idea is that less water's going to get in than dunking the whole thing in sink of water.

But your way sounds like it'd work much better.

Here's a bit of advice if you plan on breaking the keyboard open for a thorough cleaning - do not use rubbing alcohol on those plastic grid sheets inside. The alcohol will simply wipe away those printed leads.

You can flood the rest of the keyboard in it, but not those sheets. I b0rked a sweet $150 wireless keyboard by doing just that. I was ever so slightly distraught by that.
