A New Player's View Of Ns

GaryMGaryM Join Date: 2004-04-26 Member: 28220Members
I played NS for the first time yesterday and thought I'd give you my thoughts on it:

I joined a Combat game as a Marine and immediately the spawn point came under attack by waves of aliens, some crawling, some flying, some just running stright at me and the whole thing overlaid with the chatter of gunfire and someone screaming for the console to be welded - very exciting stuff! Eventually a group of Heavy Armour-ed Marines broke through and we charged into the alien hive. The thing was disgusting, I duly unloaded a whole HMG clip into it, then I was killed but I felt pretty righteous at having smacked that hive about.

This was great fun, I couldn't wait to play more so I joined a regular NS game but unfortunately there were only 2 humans on each team and the rest were bots so things were a bit odd, but it looked like there was a lot of potential and I would love to play a big proper game of NS. Keep up the good work.

Glad you liked CO; a lot of people actually are bitchin about how beta4 messed CO up totally, but that's just my opinion

...because I *HATE* CO. Well, I feel that NS is the *real* NS; it's where the FPS/RTS hybrid comes into play. Add me to your Friends list at john[underscore]sheu[at]hotmail[dot]com (well, I *am* paranoid) and I'll show your around NS sometime.

Glad to know that you liked NS (the game) though and are willing to look past CO, as rather few new players do! Welcome to the club!

    A) Welcome....

    B) Combat is a great way to become accustomed to the game somewhat, you learn about alien abilities, you can see what an HMG can do first-hand, and it's pretty exciting.

However, real true NS:Classic is the heart/soul of NS, it's what the majority of players play and what started the craze.

My suggestion is play 50% Combat, 50% Classic until you find which one you like better...

But good luck and always remember to have fun.

remember to read the manual before playing ns classic

it really sucks having no idea what each building does, and it's just not as fun

I've been on a few different servers trying to get into a game of NS but on a few of them no-one wanted to command and on the one that had a commander I could hardly make out what he was saying and he was getting annoyed. I'm going to persever though. I might play as an alien for a while, though it seems a bit harder to get to grips with...

This thread reminds me of my first NS game (1.0 )... No one knew "how-to-play" and gaming was fun while learning the complete new mod... Today most "veteran" (note: players that have played more than a year) players are really rude to beginners... That's not good if we want NS to grow and continue... If this community "closes the door" infront of beginners it will lose a lot of promising players. The point? Try to remember your "first time"... Be nice to beginners and instead of whining try to make them learn the game and see the whole meaning of NS

THIS, is the type of ppl NS needs. good ppl who like the game, and dont treat others like flies.

in some time when you become used to NS,perhaps you could Join [-RAF-]{NS}?
also, if your looking for a good server with, useually, good ppl, try Freaks Unleashed! or 207.200.24.214:27015 (same thing really)

i hope you enjoy NS like me, its really a great game, i will be seeing you from the shadows.

My true first NS game was when 2.0 came out, I had played 1.04 but do to technical issues, couldn't enjoy it. I already had experience and knew what to expect, but not how to expect them.

Edit: Also, if you're in game and press the Tab key and look at the scoreboard and want some help playing, look for someone with a blue/white icon by their name that looks like stars. You have a good chance of finding someone willing to help you. Be warned, there are some jerks out there that have these icons, but for the most part, those with icons are usually polite and very helpful.

My views on NS are always going to be positive. It's players I can critisize because of rare, but sometimes frequent stuipdity.

I'd recommend the OldF and Lunixmonster servers. Both of them have a decent crowd of fairly skilled players, and usually one or two who know how to command. Just remember; listen to your Commander, even if he seems to be doing something nonsensical.

Lol my first few games and my best game was on ns_eclipse. I had no clue were teh @#$@ i was going and our commander was putting way points 5 feet ahead of all of us every 5 seconds. Although I would get **** now due to big blue dots in my way it was sweet then.

I know exactly what you mean, it's such a different experience than these days, more about the atmosphere. Great fun. Still is good though, otherwise I would have left.

Come over to TheVille.org servers (TheVille.org II & III, check my sig for the IPs) TV II is a combat only, and TV III is a combo based on player votes in game. Our regulars are very friendly and helpful. If you ever need any help just ask for it, and the regulars will help you (Look for people with the tags <TVB> =US-name-V= and .TVR, which are the 3 main guilds at the Ville) I am also in the process of setting up a new player night for classic mode.

hahaha, i would love to start ns again now. I remember being gorge and having no idea what to do. It took me 2 games to realise how to build a res point and 1000's to remember where all of the res points were.
Now u can just use the minimap.

Still, I miss the hivesight, even today I sometimes get lost in places I could navigate with my eyes close using only those three pleasent yellow blips

BTW, any news on weather they plan to put the amount of res structures/evolutions cost back in the popup menu? I'm getting annoyed with all the new player asking me how much everything costs (before you flame me, I said annoyed, not indignant)

I believe that is a bug they are fixing. Although I'm not to sure, I just remember reading about it somewhere.

When I was noob I enjoyed the fps/rts combination, I got **** at the onos hitboxes (b2.0) I LOVED the teamwork, the fun I had with the Onos I could let walk on his hind legs...ahh good times

What I just LOVE is: When I'm one of my favorite pub's, the teams are equal (same amount of ppl, and skills, not n00bs vs clanners) and everyone is working perfectly together, both teams keep putting pressure, creative strategies are used, no reswhor3s, no skulk rush every game, no 4 minuts Fatnoscowmoronionloserreswhorian...

2bad I have such moments once in a few days, I gotta play more!

    <offtopic>
you can still walk through the railings at the Ominous rt

I played a game on the OldF server the other day and it was great fun, though since I don't yet know the names of all the locations it's hard when I get messages like, "Go to such-and-such" - more waypoints please

I've played a lot of Counter-Strike and there's been tense moments, and I've played Day Of Defeat and there's been exciting moments, but NS is definately the scariest game I've played. I don't think any other game gives you such a creepy feeling as you get at the start when you're patrolling a corridor, eyes scanning ahead when suddenly a Skulk drops onto your face; or the adrenalin rush you get when you are running backwards, firing your HMG into an Onos' face whilst screaming, "Get some! You like that?"... then you get eaten. Bleugh. Great fun!
  • RecoupRecoup Join Date: 2004-04-25 Member: 28195Members
That whole getting eaten thing **** me off. I was a maxed out marine with a HMG and all of a sudden that large screen with the guts of the Onos pops up and the progress bar starts going... and I'm thinking to myself "GOD DAMNIT!"

As someone mentioned earlier, reading the manual can be helpful. However, it is quite difficult to find, I think. So, here is a link to it.
