Looking at the pictures of the wild horses running through the town makes me think about what this planet will be like when we are gone, expecially if something wipes out just humans.
Yeah people sometimes miss the point. The only reason the Russian government told us (I was born in Kiev in 1980 my family migrated to the US in 89) was because the radiation cloud hit other Europian cities. They told us almost a full week after the fact, the said "drink plenty of water, and you will be fine." The firefighters and emergency personell who went to the site were not told what they were being sent to do, most of them died on site. THe rest died later suffering badly. They only evacuated people from a 20km radious and moved them into houses in the surrounding area.
Anyhow, I'm going to spread the word about that site. People should see it.

Radiation Death is one of my worse fears... your skin literally melting off and your eyeballs melting in their sockets. Eagh. And wow... onlything I've seen that creeepy is when I was out with my aunt around 1 am in the morning. There was like 1 car on the roads an a 150 thousand pop. city.

the death tolls for Chernobyl are far above 300,000 and are still rising every year, entire cities have been deserted indefinitely, guard posts have been set up around the borders of a big nuclear desert manned by the military, and everyone who enters for long periods of time has to get a chemical shower. There's enough radiation in some areas to kill you in less than 15 minutes, and stain trees red. I think Three Mile Island was a little small compared to Chernobyl.
I live like 30, 40 miles from Three Mile Island. If it was similar to Chernobyl I'd probably be dead right now... although it was <i>close</i> to a total meltdown, it didn't actually do much of anything. The difference is quite significant (and partially due to the fact that we built our reactors properly).

Actually it wouldn't be like 28 days later. This city is empty for 18 years now, and you can see that, London in 28 days later is still in the same state as 28 days before. I think walking in empty London would be scarier, knowing that same mega event JUST happend causing everyone to evacuate, unlike Chernobyl, wich got evacuated 18 years ago. But anyway, I'm not saying I don't find it creepy at all, I'd love to go there with a group of you..

Took that quote from the site, I saw a program on BBC called Horizon it was all about how that "sarcophagus" is in fact falling to bits and will probably fall down sometime soon. Apparently there wasn't much time to build it properly they just wanted to throw something over what was left of the reactor as fast as possable as a result it's now sinking on one side and falling to bits and none wants to or wants to pay for a new one to be built.
My grandma who used to live pretty close to it, told me that some of the employees were told to squeeze more power out of the reactor so they raised the RPM or whatever, but ended up raising it too much thus causing all of that.
