<div class="IPBDescription">A Metalhead's Verdict</div>Good movie, black metal scenes made me giggle repeatedly, good bands were featured (sans Slipknot, perhaps... never did listen to them; started with power metal and went straight into death and grind), the interviews on a whole rocked, and it summed up every reason I was, still am, and likely always will be a metalhead. It's a community and borders on a lifestyle. You can see a metalhead on the street and often have it turn into a conversation. I have on many occasions.

And yeah, metal is a lifestyle by all definitions of the word. I'm like that guy in the documentary who liked Lamb of Jesus or whatever new metal. People tell me my music taste sucks. My friends want me to stop listening to aggressive music because it's embarrassing. Whenever I meet someone in like, an "At the Gates" t-shirt, it's immediately a 2h conversation. Also its great when you dress like a metalhead yourself too, (which I do rarely in fear of reprisal <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> ) and you get random people throwing the horns at you from across the street. <img src="http://gallery.bsdforen.de/albums/userpics/10001/headbang.gif" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Whatever happened to good metal.

Happened? The last metal album was made in like, 95. Nothing happened to good metal is just stopped happening. Nowadays all we have is mall-core kids. A fair trade some might say. Anal eruption, is the opinion of others.

Also define "good metal". As in "how can you rate objectively something as subjective as music taste?"
I know these aren't exactly new bands, but Symphony X, Megadeth and Dream Theater are still around and still are awesome (ok, they're not death metal or pain cultists but they're still metal).

Well I've never been a fan of Megadeth. They were more on the same level as Aerosmith and Motley Crue. I especially hated Megadeth's vocals. They suck horrediously. What's worse Dave often sings in French which makes him more of a dork.
The only reason Pantera is as popular as they were was because their concerts were ultra violent.

What? Say what you want about Mustaine, but Hangar 18 is one of the best metal albums ever released. Pantera sort of "borrowed" their guitar style from Exhorder, so their music isn't all that original. They're not only popular because of their violent concerts though (I was completely unaware of their reputation for that until you said it here).

They got queer somewhere late nineties early 00's, with "Risk" and "The World Needs a Hero". Blech!
And all that "LOL DEFIEN "GOOD METAL" I LIKE XXX AND YOU DON'T" gets old fast. Of course I can't "rate objectively something as subjective as music taste". It's obvious I was just stating my opinion. No need to get all intellectual with definitions, objectivity and crap, it's a goddamn metal thread. Bang your head!

Ok, Hanger 18 is a gimme, it's not that bad a album. But if we went by that logic, MC Hammer is the best rapper of all time.

DEATH! <i>THE</i> DEATH! Greatest band I've ever heard... Chuck Schuldiner was absolutely amazing, and he wrote such moving lyrics.

God, the list could go on for ages... Nevermore, Jesu, My Dying Bride, Meshuggah, Finntroll, Mastodon, Devin Townsend and Strapping Young Lad, Lamb of God, Kreator, gods. There's a massive, thriving, and incredibly good metal scene. I've been listening to it obsessively for four or five years and I've only really barely scratched past the surface.
