    Please don't use boolean, its the tool of the beast. For the best results without your model exploding you will have to do the holes manually... oh the joys of doing that in MS3D.

    I know how to do them in ms3d, but i am trying to stay away from ms3d for a bit. And I use gmax and cant find whatever the tool you suggested me to use.

    C3 there is no reason NOT to use boolean as long as you clean up the mesh afterwards, it's actually the only method I know of worth using for cutting holes in non-planar (or multiple) faces. I'll make a short video about using it at some point, it's probably one of max's most under-rated low-poly mesh tools.

    Pretty much the same way you do it in ms3d, just delete faces and make new cylinders, then make new faces. Poly per poly is much faster in 3ds, so you shouldent have to waste but a few minuites doing it.

    na i think he wants to punch heaps of holes thru a single sheet

    make a punch tool duplicate it and position it correctly with numbers duplicate hte to then since you know that number it shoud lbe easy to positon the next two grab the 40 and so on

    for the next row usaly with a heat sheild each row of holes even with the other row

    <img src="http://taylorgunsmithing.com/Store/images/SHS1300-SM.gif" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    once you have enough hole punch tolls evenly spread out across your sheet raise the sheet onto the punch tools

    then indovidualy select each punch tool and boolean, since yoru punch tools will prolly be 8-12 sided cylenders at each point it punches its going to run a new edge line across your sheet, now dont be too worried if a punch tool has to punch a hole across a edge if the program doesnt handle it clean up those edges as you go they really arnt nessacery and in most cases can be removed with joinging the two faces togther,
    *note this is if your programs very limited to only have three vert faces like milk shape

    once you punch all your holes your punch tools should disapear with each boolean feel free to merge any faces and remove any edges to clean up your prim count if they wont go leave em

    now feel free to latice or bend your heat sheild mesh around things to suit your barrel

    a tip for cheacking your numbers, roate your camera and make sure all punches are semi in line

    but yes this is all unessacery when you could get a texture to do the same thing and save about 2000 on poly count

    but if you really wanna puch holes for a heat sheild i wont stop you

    <img src="http://www.sogarmory.com/ProductImages/ARMS58M_102480_img1.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    trust me textures will save you a heap on polys, if you can texture it and make the textures look 3d your a star and you will keep your poly coult so nice and low you will be loveing it

    here a mock up in 30 odd minutes

    note .psp and alpha transperency will allow for see thru textures.
    In the old half like engine try exsackt blue on your color scale for areas you want transparent will get you transparency

    ya need the flat steel panel like shape

    you need a solid primative the desired shape of the hole you wish to punch

    the best thing you can do is duplicate said hole punch and set it to duplicate many along said axis
    said exsackt distance apart so all your holes are perfectly spread

    then you need to shift select one at a time the base plate then the first hole punch, then use your boolen tool you may have three options, if your base plate takes a slit out of your hole punch instead of the hole punch punching a hole you need to undo a swap the order you selected the two primatives in

    ya got a image for us fuzzy?

    Heres a quick something i did to show a better wall to creating holes without boolean.

    <a href="http://img315.imageshack.us/img315/4098/holesat3.jpg" target="_blank">http://img315.imageshack.us/img315/4098/holesat3.jpg</a>

    After you've completed that, you can extrude or whatever to give you, your indent.
