Agree/Disagree: It is currently too tedious/a pain-in-the-###### to find and download common files (patches, maps, fixes, tweaks, etc) that you as a gamer want or need.

    I can't fall either way.

I love finding things for myself and helping spread the word, but if it was all packaged together, I know it'd be really convenient.

    ...I'll fall "Disagree".

Agree. Google is awesome, however, things like Steam have spoiled me.

Games that patch themselves and whatnot are awesome. Games that can't integrate some simple bittorrent client or some other distribution method to get necessary content to players belong in 1999.

If you have to find patches, even if it really isn't very hard because like me, and unlike many (hard to beleave, but true) you know how to use google, you shouldn't have to. If game programers can make an engine that renders highly detailed models and levels, then they can add in a download manager. Most games these days are good at this.

Disagree, you have to have a serious intelligence deficit if you have trouble finding patches for a game when it's getting to be so you can download the whole thing without even getting up from your chair.

Disagree, even for old games that don't even have a supporting company anymore, finding a patch has never been especially difficult and exceedingly easy in most cases

Let me rephrase: I was just curious if people would use a site that contained a very simple, centralized file depository with reforce, cpl mousefix, etc all in one place (I have some spare webspace). Maybe in the future other files (like demos etc) could be deposited into it. Would you, as a gamer, make use of this type of website?

I think you wanted us to agree that theres not a whole lot of stuff on this site or others for the things you described, and if there is, they have to look. What you're speaking of is a nice organized repository of resources, downloads and third party tools to make your NS experience better.
I'd like, and use it, but I already have no problem finding the stuff I need through 5 or 10 minutes of research.

Disagree, but I'll also say that for newcomers to PC gaming it's a huge obstacle. It's a completely new concept that even after they buy the game and install it they have to track down patches and download them, and then install them.

Not with official patches or updates.

But something like say, a first person view pistol model with a laser, that was hard to find.

Google sucks when it comes to things that you can only describe generally, and specifically doesn't work because there are usually no matches or you can't find the right words for it.

I tried searching "laser pistol model natural selection"(without the quotes) and it gave me to sites that were useless.

After several attempts of searching, and even asking for the model on sites like nsarmslabs.com, the IRC channel(forums were down), and several other forums... The constellation testing came, and I got access to the forums, and with the power of forum search, I found the laser pistol model for marines.

In other words: Google does fail you. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_hoaxes" target="_blank">Google Hoaxes</a> <a href="http://www.google.com/mentalplex/MP_faq.html" target="_blank">MentalPlex Hoax, FAQ</a>. If only MetalPlex was true, then google would not fail anyone!

For patches.... I think I'd rather google them. I mean seriously, do you want X number of game companies uploading data to your computer directly? I prefer to have a buffer, Ausgamers.com

Using an integrated bit-torrent client for distribution of patches is problematic. When? If you have it running in some background process, people will be up in arms about it (particularly those who may suddenly see their connection disabled because they have a speedy one with a low bandwidth limit). If you have it running while playing the game, those with a slow connection will be up in arms about the lag. And due to the nature of most modern connections (more downstream than upstream), few if any users will match their upload with their download during the time it takes to download a patch, meaning that seeding (or leaving the torrent active after it finishes downloading) WILL be necessary in order to make the system work.

Hell, look at Guild Wars. Fast download of required data at all times (except for the first week after the launch of Nightfall, when servers were slow due to the enormous influx of players). One-way content delivery systems, like Steam or Guild Wars, are the way forward. I guess you could always add bit-torrent functionality to it, but I'd say that it'd be a good idea to make uploading opt-in then.
