<div class="IPBDescription">Any pros?</div>I've begun looking into poker a bit lately, following the craze. Only been playing free rolls (Hold 'em) though, way too scared of getting addicted if I started playing with real money.

Anyway, I keep getting owned, so I was wondering if we have any pros on this forum maybe? Perhaps you could care to share some tips with the less adept, or maybe recommend a book on the subject? Right now I guess my biggest fault is doing really stupid things, hoping to get lucky. So I've come up with a rule of thumb:
YOU NEVER EVER GET LUCKY.

I've heard somewhere that 90% of the poker players lose more money than they win, but hey, I'm very willing to waste a bit of my time to get in among those last 10%. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Yeah, something like "The odds say I have a pretty good chance at winning this hand, let's go all in!". As I said, it's guaranteed to make you lose. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Im pretty fair at hold-em, cleaned out my friends for $50 or so a few times.

    Tricks I've learned:

-It's good if you have a pair
-It's really good if you have a pocket pair
-It's even better if your pair is the highest possible pair on the table come to flop
-Always keep an eye out for possible flushes/ straights. If someone bets high and those possibilities are out there, be careful. Unless of course you have either of them. Then raise him.
-Try and learn the habits of the people you play with, assuming you do the same group frequently
-A good trick for easy money is go in big on the flop in the first 2 rounds, espically if you have anything in your hand from J-A. Most people won't want to match anything on the first round. Easy money if they fold.
-Maximize your profits when you are SURE that you are going to win. Highest 3 of a kind on the table, no straight/flush possibilities, etc.
-A good way of doing this is better very low, making the other person think you are only doing it to stay in. If they bet high, raise them even more. But only enough that it is in their best interest to stay in. So not more then they raised you. If they follow your low bet with another low bet, or only match it... oops. Raise them a little bit to get them to stay in.
-Understand that most people don't WANT to lose any money. So they won't take many risks. It is your job to create this risks and cause them to fold.
-Folding is not a bad thing. However never do it before you see the flop, there is nothing worse then finding out that you had 3 of a kind 2s and folded.

That's about all I can think of right now, eh.

You can't learn to play poker for money by playing at free tables. You'll learn more bad habits than you need to; habits you'll have to break later if you want to win any money.

As for books, I've heard good things about Zen and the Art of Poker, by Larry Phillips. I haven't read it myself.

The only real thing I can tell you is that you can't win by being timid. If you are winning, it means you're being agressive, or you're getting lucky. Figure out where your comfort level is, then play at a table whose stakes are below that, so you can make bets that are outside of other people's comfort zones. If people are regularly making bets outside of your comfort zone, then move to a lower stakes table. It means you're folding on winning hands too often.
