The new aimbot

Real gun-equiped sentry robot: <a href="http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/samsung_develops_machine_gun_sentry_robot_costs_200k.php" target="_blank">here</a>.
Has a video, with adventurous "Pirates of the Caribbean" music included in parts.

Has a speaker for warnings, I'm not sure how autonomous it is, but it does target humans automatically. It's for use between North and South Koreas.

    What stops them from just shooting it or seeking cover and throwing grenades? Or avoid it. They got enough warning.

    BTW best music ever

    Some potential warnings this robot can utter (blatantly stolen from Slashdot comments)

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->"Dead or alive, you're coming with me!"
    "Your move, creep!"
    "Stay out of trouble!"

    "Ah-ah, I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking, 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' And to tell you the truth, I've deleted that information in all the excitement. But being as this is a 5.5 caliber machine gun, a reasonably priced weapon for developing nations, and has nigh infinite ammo, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, PUNK?"

    NUMBER FIVE IS ALIVE!!

    It looks like you are entering my firing range. Would you like help with this feature?
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    The video is just begging for a dance remix, the robot looks like its dancing at one part. Samsung's tagline is fun though. Techwin!
    Also, why didn't DOOManiac post this first? You're slipping doomeh!

    That's scary. But yeah, if you look closely, it doesn't have 360 degrees of rotation, plus if you get close enough, you could outmove the turret head. Plus, something large enough could knock it over. HL2 turrets, anyone?

    And not to mention vehicles. 5.5mm are the same as the P90, right? They don't necessarily have the same penetration power as the P90, so a vehicle.. or even a slab of metal in front of you as a ballistic shield should stop it.

    Plus, it ignores trees and looks for patterns? Well.. what about disguising yourself? Man, I can't wait to see what those crazy South Koreans think of to avoid these things. Plus, how accurate can it be over long distance?

    I think the <a href="http://www.metalstorm.com/" target="_blank">Metal Storm</a> would be a better option. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Looked alot damn better than a human spraying over a distance on that video.

    I don't see why a machine would have trouble doing the simple math it takes to calculate where a bullet is going to go once you shoot it.

    Hm, never thought of it like that. Good point, good point.

    Whattabout reloading? And jams?
  • ThaldarinThaldarin Alonzi&#33; Join Date: 2003-07-15 Member: 18173Members, Constellation
    It's a static machine meant for defensive purposes so I'd imagine you could store a hell of alot of ammunition on the side which can just be reeled through the machine and people would regularly check on the levels or alternatively the robot sends out a signal to the computer?

    As for jams uh... I think that's a people thing again.
  • GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
    I would think you wouldn't want full 360 rotation, and bolt it down, or it turns around and becomes a problem for you...

    Also, notice that someone was operating the interface on that thing, likely, someone can watch a few of these and the person decides whether to issue a warning or shoot, etc.

    If the SciFi channel has taught me anything, its that there is absolutely nothing wrong with making robotic slaves and then sending them to war.

    Just put a freaking scanning red eye on it and quit beating around the bush.

    More like "as the original 70's TV show taught me." I mean come on, that thing's better than the new one easily.

    Now, I haven't watched the old ones, so I can't speak from a position of absolute authority, but from what I've heard and read of the old BSG, it was awesome in the way that people thought Thundercats was awesome when they were young.

    Did I miss something? Anyway, the danger to the owning party in something like this depends on how much autonomy it has and what mistakes it can make under that autonomy.

    Wouldn't suprise me if they will use some thing like that like they do in half life plonk it to cover a flank etc.

    Dude.... That is scarey......

    North Korea is going to be full of turret farms. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/turret.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::sentry::" border="0" alt="turret.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/turret.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::sentry::" border="0" alt="turret.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/turret.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::sentry::" border="0" alt="turret.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/turret.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::sentry::" border="0" alt="turret.gif" />

    I mean, if there's one thing that movies\games tell us it's that giving any sort of AI-like thing a gun is a Bad Idea. At least it's a static emplacement, rather than those things from Deus Ex

    <a href="http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/video-hal-5-robot-suit-ready-for-production" target="_blank">Cyberdyne</a> is already real. Don't these fools realize what they have just unleashed with these turrets? It's inevitable.

    We MUST find Sarah Conner before Taco Bell win the franchise war and Arnold Scharwarzennegaeragaerga become the president. Uh. wait. wrong movie.
