What, why are you all glaring at me?
I've been exposing my flatmate to...
- Oh my me strawberry egg
- Kino's Journey; the beautiful world
- Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO!)
- Tsukihime (one of my favouritist animes evar!)
I'm tempted to grab peach girl and pick up where I left off with it (I got so far in before I ran out of space for it).
A friend also told me I should watch Nana and Paradise Kiss so I'm working through those too.
Manga wise? Peach Girl was the last thing I read I think.
Admittedly I've been hunting for the translations of the original Slayers novels which tokyopop have been publishing (Slayers was originally a novel that got turned into a manga in a weekly magazine... Dragon or something. From there it became an anime. It was originally called something really funny like 'super explosive magic adventure' or the like but was eventually retitled 'Slayers' :3 )
Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
Dragon Ball Z
Full Metal Alchemist
Gundam Wing
Gundam Seed
InuYasha
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Rurouni Kenshin
Saint Seiya (The Knights of The Zodiac) The Hades - Chapter Sanctuary and Chapter Inferno rox!!!
Those Who Hunt Elves
X Tv - 1999
Yu Yu Hakusho
that's it!! ^^
Yay, messed the link up. -_-
Okay, thats done with.
I started watching .hack//sign about a week ago. I'm only on episode 17 and not really sure whats going on yet.
I also was watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, until the local video store didn't see a reason to keep getting the DVDs, so I'm stuck on volume 4, lest I be a pirate. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> Its really really good though. I think even better than the first movie, which felt like it spent more time on nekkidness than plot progression <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
The only series I've seen the whole way through so far are:
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop + movie
Lain
Full Metal Alchemist + movie
and Chobits, because I'm a pretty, pretty girl.
Usually I just enjoy the very different attitude and culture japan has that permeates the medium. It's nice to not have completely hackneyed plot devices that you see in most western films (or failing that, at least <b>different</b> hackneyed plot devices :p ).
Example? in any american film where there's even the remotest part of complexity to the story or characters they usually throw in someone who mysteriously knows the details AND MUST EXPLAIN THEM TO SOMEONE just so the more clueless members of the audience get clued in. Sometimes this really verges on insulting or slows the pace down.
You can see that if you look in most, but a brilliant example is in Alien Resurrection; when they find out one of the characters is an android (she has a hole with white gunk coming out of it) a marine suddenly perks up and starts screaming enthusiastically about every little detail of what an android is, where they come from and just because you're stupid points out that she is an android.
BRILLIANT!!! :D
Not trying to troll or anything, but I never understood why people like anime/manga over other stuff. How is it different from any other fiction, western or not? And I mean the "smart" looking anime not pokemon or dragonball :-/

Am I trying to start a flame war? Well, a man can dream, can he not? Per aspera ad astra!
Still enjoy the classics, myself. Miyazaki, as hackneyed as some of his plots are, knows how to pull off presentation. Vampire Hunter D is quite good (though 'bloodlust' is excused... vampire rocket ship! w00t!), as well as Appleseed and Spriggan. Akira's decent, but the dub copy I have is hilariously badly translated. Lensman was also a decent series, though it got a little heavy on the religious parallels in the end (as a lot of anime that starts out good seems to end up doing, for one reason or another). Hellsing is a bit more 'popcorn', but has potential for quite a bit of substance.
let me list mine too:
Hunter X Hunter
One Piece
Naruto (really bored after some episodes)
Deathnote
Full Metal Alchemist
Gundam G
Basilisk
Series Experiment Lain
Get Backers
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Chobits
Digicharat
Keroro
Yakitate Japan
Cardcaptor Sakura
recently:
Syagan no Shana
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haurhi (favourite <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> )
Kanon (remade version by Kyoto Animation)
i would like to recommend <a href="http://wiki.sos-dan.com/wiki/Main_Page" target="_blank">The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haurhi</a>
.
not just the story, but i like the way Kyoto Animation presented the anime. It is told out of order. The story came from several books of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzumiya_Haruhi" target="_blank">orginal series</a>. if it is presented according to the correct time sequence, the story may look less interesting. thus, they reordered the whole story to create an impact, and actually it did. i guess it is the very first anime to have such way of presentation. its one of the most popular anime this year although some of its part are not suitalbe for youngsters <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
We also watched Cowboy Bebop a while back. That was pretty pro.
I'm watching though NGE by myself. Up to the second last episode. Getting a smidgen weird...
--Scythe--
over other stuff? I dunno if I like anime/manga 'over' other stuff but I do like it Rusty :3

No fair, you used a crappy movie! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad-fix.gif" />
But seriously, look at Alien 1. You had plenty of unexplained things there. The mysterious ship, it's captain, origins of the alien etc. Points is, I'm sure I could find crappy anime.
I've watched some anime, like a few epsiodes of Naruto and Dragonball Z or whatever my more "japanophilically" inclined friends happened to have at the time. I really don't see that much in common between the two - aside from visual style; that you can say "You like Naruto? Then you must like genericanimefiger 3"
I've also watched some just because I've heard good things, like Jin Roh, or appleseed. I liked both alot, but I can't say I like anime just because I liked some of it. It's like saying I like all action films after watching rambo.
Oh, by the way, series NOT to watch: <a href="http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Neon_genesis_evangelion" target="_blank">Neon Genesis Evangelion</a>. (Warning: Link may contain uncyclopedic content and <a href="http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Image:Maleasuka.jpg" target="_blank">offensive imagery</a>.)

i really cannot understand what Neon Genesis Evangelion is trying to say. i watched this when i was young like 10. and 10 years later i still cannot understand. i dunno why it will be so popular as i personally just think that they are trying to suck money out of your pockets with non-stop product bombardments... and yes they are making a new ending in 2007.

Blasphemy! Neon Genesis rocks my socks.
What is it trying to say? Well, throughout the series its evident that pretty much all the characters are dysfunctional and miserable with their lives and their inability to love, and be loved, by their friends and coworkers. The Human Instrumentality Project is aimed at evolving humanity beyond this painful physical form and into a state of being where we are all as one, where there is no pain and misery from being alone. That's my interpretation of it, anyway. I don't think the angels are ever explained implicitly, but they are hella cool.
The writer of Neon Genesis I believe suffered from manic depression, as if that's a surprise.
A different ending to the movie would be interesting, as the manga movie was so very depressing after watching the whole series. Still good, though....but somewhat traumatic.

Hoolay! \^_^/
So, explain the ending to me. Why does it not make sense? Would an ending that made sense not be much much better? Discuss! And by discuss, I mean flame!
Honestly I don't know how the ending makes sense...everything sort of descends into a trans-concious state of existence, designed to guide Shinji toward loving himself. I have no idea how it comes about, or why. A lot of fans wrote angry letters to the creator saying they wanted a proper ending, and in response said creator made End of Evangelion which was basically a big middle finger to all those people. Great stuff : D
It's actually really sad watching Neon Genesis because with most of the characters you just want to see them happy and [/i]getting on[/i] with each other. You can tell they all love each other but are too afraid to open themselves up, and as a result everyone just gets more and more miserable.
The human instrumentality project has officially commenced. 4th Impact has begun. Human individuality has seceded in favor of the next step in the human evolutionary potential, and thusly has merged us all into one conscious being: A new liquefied life form, if you will. In this, Shinji must decide if he is worth being a part of this conscious, if he should be a part of the next evolutionary step, or if he should find a way to hold back...and die.
Paraphraised: Watch the End of Evangelion. Its a movie. Its good. With what I said up top, you'll understand.
Instrumentality: All people become one.
VS
No instrumentality: Everyone keeps their individuality
Shinji gets to decide
Series ending: instrumentality: everyone becomes one
Second movie ending: no instrumentality: people can become individuals if they choose to
Get it now?
edit: instrumentality, not instrumentalism >_< can't believe how I mixed em up, instrumentalism is about believing if things are true etc
on a side note, watch the last two episodes on one screen and the movies on another (actually, just rebirth from death:rebirth or air from the end) interesting things... veery interesting.
oh, spoilers: shinji isn't trying to choke her at the end, he's trying to stroke it (again).

Well, I said this maaany many moons ago but to be honest you don't or shouldn't really 'like anime' or 'hate anime' just because it's anime. It's just another medium. There will be cruddy anime just as there will be western films that are an intellectual delight and don't just follow a silly formula :3
I know I said I 'liked anime' but I assure you there's plenty of ones that I really dislike to the point where I feel like they've killed my parents... there's just more that I enjoy ^~
I guess, for me at least, saying I like anime is like saying I like films; there's lots of genres in there and stuff I don't like but on the whole I like films. I like books too and walking and writing and drawing and games. From my point of view that's how I 'like anime' ^^
Also I didn't think Alien Resurrection was actually bad; I enjoyed it as a fabby lil' popcorn 'comic book' movie which is the way it seemed to be taking itself.
If you want a bad movie in the aliens series I'd pick 3 which was terrible; you couldn't really sympathise with most of the characters so watching them die had no real emotion to it and the few that actually had any pleasant-ness to them or depth were mired in a bland, plodding plot that was about as interesting as an old Brick.
It's the <b>only</b> movie I've ever fallen asleep in. I even endured watching it multiple times to catch it all just because I would've felt wrong not seeing every part of every film in the aliens series (of which I was a huge fan :3 ).
As for Naruto and Dragonball Z? it's like comparing Young Guns with Starship troopers; they're both films and they have people fighting with guns... it's not a comparison I'd ever have personally made <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Protip: Don't read into anime too much, if you're looking for some deep, profound philosophical statement, chances are it's not there.
Recent stuff I've watched:
Black Lagoon Season 2
Last Exile
