It's been a while since I talked on these forums ... I was here back in the terror, sYn, eVe and the good ol' veteran days. Wondering if anyone was still around from those times.
I started playing in 1.04. I still remember people trying to use the old blink and end up getting blasted to hell. So, they just used the ultra-powerful acid rocket.
I loved exploiting blink to get to cool places <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Anywho, I loved the babblers and have been playing since 1.04. You guys know of Bry's NS 1.04 steam mod? <a href="http://www.brywright.co.uk/ns/steam104.php" target="_blank">Linkeh</a>
good stuff <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />

1.0 here... those first few awkward days of paranoia, building turrets everywhere... the server admins giving Marines ten times the res income as Kharaa.. not being able to shut down a turret farm by killing the factory... nonworking MT (which made the game a whole lot more fun, honestly).
And especially the hours-long rounds. Those were awesome.

Hour-long? I remember epic battles lasting 6 hours or more... Now those were the days. Wall-of-lame FTW.

One game I had to go because I to work my 4 hour shift. I come back 4 hours later join up the server and the same game was still going on. Ended up being a marine victory, and the same comm commanded for the 5.5 hour game.
Hour<b>s</b>-long, RuBy. He said hour<b>s</b>-long. 1 hour was a pretty quick game by 1.0x standards. I've heard legends of 16 hour+ games. I have myself experienced 8+ hours. It was totally awesome, and now its gone forever.

Actually, I just recently had a 2 hour game on "Jigglypuff's NS Jigglyroom" (my server of choice. I don't care what people say about it!) on ns_hera. Both teams were filled with vets and the game swung back and forth at least 4 times...I think we, marines, won in the end <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
It's funny how most people think that the "correct" attributes for the aliens are still those that came out on 1.0 (IE a fade with bilebomb instead of a gorge) but listening to playtesters you start to realize just how interchanged the abilities were. I guess they kinda make sense pretty much anywhere.

Yep, I'd said 'hours'... I particularly remember the Battle for Eclipse on nano-gridlock. It was one of those sixteen-hour long games. No countdown timer, no motion tracking. Personally brought the team back from zero-hive TWICE, the first time as the last alien alive. Marines didn't lock down the other Hives well enough, just popped them and moved on to try for a quick victory. Went from zero to three, back to zero, re-captured another hive with the sacrifice of two of the remaining Skulks. Hell, I can't even remember if we won or lost, but it was a BLAST. People joining up and dropping out, fighting back and forth over territory.. it was everything NS was meant to be.
Despite all of it's flaws I still think 1.04 was the best. The multi-hour games made it fell like you were truly fighting over the station/ship/whatever. And a skilled (or sometimes just lucky) player bringing his team back from the brink. And when you have been fighting along side the same people for a few hours you got the felling of being a unit, and when a person had to leave it did feel like a loss, and that new player who joined the team feels like a rookie to you. And when you returned on the same game hours later, you felt like reinforcements cominf to save your team.
Infact it is for this reason I think the clans that came out of 1.04 were the most skilled. When you played a map for hours you had to work together to hang on. Players got to know each other's style to the point that they did not even have to comunicate many times to know what each other was doing. Now many games are 15-20mins at best. You dont get that feeling that your are truly fighting for something, now it is just "whipe out the other team as quickly as possible". You no longer get the same coherent unit feel the epics games used to give.
1.04 need balanced a bit more and exploits fixed. It did not need a completely new version with massive changes. It did nto need to be shortened. It did not turly need combat (though it is good for practice and getting enough people to play true NS). Now it just feels like another Half-Life mod to me. I thought if I went away for a long time and came back (almost a year and a half later) it would feel new again. And it did, but not like 1.04 did. It felt like playing a mod designed for short attention spans.
Granted this is all just my feelings on NS at the moment

It's not just you, NS has been modified to make the rounds shorter, more decisive. The slippery slope is increased, to assure a quick victory for one side or the other.
Personally, I'd love to see a lot of the changes rolled back. At one point I'd asked Voogru to code a series of reverter plugins (allow kharaa to use PGs, no ping of death, removal of motion tracking, tighter spread for the HMG, among others) but it appears that he's busy with other projects.
I also wouldn't mind seeing a bugfixed version of NS2.0z released. It was extremely well balanced, and was more territory-grab oriented, with higher RT HP, but a significant delay before the towers started to produce anything, to cut down on the RT-rush strategy. In fact, most rush-tactics were proven to be ineffective, other than to capture a given point. Sadly, it was decided that an epic game like that was 'no fun', and the version that months were devoted toward balancing was scrapped in favor of CS-like lightning rounds. Think that's why I've taken to playing BF2 and BF2142 more recently. It manages to have at least some of that 'epic quality' feel to it, that's been intentionally removed from NS to cater toward the 'just five minutes' players.

Playing since day 2, I remember HA jetpacking around and considering the pings they warped (hovared) through the air (without flapping <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> )
tjosan, that isn't the case at all. Trust me, the good players now are no better than they were then. The gameplay mechanics changed giving res income a snowballing effect. It was the stated goal of those changes in the changelog.
I believe we can bring back the epic battles of 1.0 and short rounds for those who don´t like to play more than 15 mins on NS. It sure need a lot of thinking how to do, but giving an option to activate the 1.0 resource system may bring back the long time battles. Battlefield series manage to give fun for both kind of players, who like epic battles or quick battles, it´s just how you configure your server.

Lucky you. I played some long games on NS 2.0 but that's basically it.
1.04 could have some epic battles with very exciting turning points, but it also had droll 2-hive lockdown situations where you'd just skulk rush over and over and over and hope you did something. Then if aliens got a 2nd hive they'd all go fade and acid spam the heck out of the marines. I also seem to remember that hitboxes were changed over time, making skulks a bit easier to hit.
It'd be neat if the map maker chose what type of game to make it. Such as a nsc_ for 1.04 mechanics or ns_ for 3.0 mechanics.
1.0 here too.... anyone remebers the "stopcommandermode" ? Well, THAT was pretty annoying... a skulk turned into a marine (with the speed of a skulk, and still able to bite down marines...)
not to mention the cool armory... "upgrading armory, you cant receive ammo for now"
but 1.04 ended up in jp rushs, so the long games were over.

would be curious as to if anyone remembers us from 1.04 and so on.

Hi! I miss lerk bombing runs when they had acid bombs during testing.

Probably would bloat the engine quite a bit.

All I remember is being infuriated by the game.
