That website makes me want to go a douse my eyes in bleach.

And none of the media galleries have anything in them except 8 concept sketches.

    Nice er... backstory though.

Considering it's on the source engine, those map shots aren't particularly impressive; I was expecting more atmosphere.

I say let it rip! Intelligent Design vs Natural Selection. Sounds like a healthy rivalry to me!

I have mixed feelings about this. I can see how this was built out of the frustrations of longtime NS players who loved long games and strategy elements (as opposed to tactical elements), watching their games get shorter and shorter; and then the forums go down, so they don't really have a community anymore; so they say - "There's this huge void here, why don't we fill it?" On that hand, I'm excited about people who have another take on a similar game, and want to run with it. On the other hand, I've been involved with the NS community so long that I'd feel weird going over to another game that's so similar, even if it is done by people who love NS.

You don't really owe anyone anything, especially your player hours. I intend on playing whatever I like the best and is the most well made, be that NS, NSS, or ID. It is yet to be seen. I like the genre NS touched on, so I'd like to see as many games in that genre as possible. The more choice for me the better.

Well tbh, those were just tests for the textures. It'll look much better when someone makes an actual map out of them, and when we get our props done.

Seriously people its not a rivalry its just anouther game, no reason why people cant play several games. I'm sure you all have lots of games on your HD's already.

No, I made it look like Triad because it was a way to test the textures. I'm not going to create and entire new original map when I'm not sure if the textures will even work.

Yeah...definitely thought that was a joke when I first went to the page. "Intelligent Design" is too obviously derived from "Natural Selection", the game sounds pretty much exactly the same as NS on source, save for some changes to the different alien species. I mean, I hope it works out for you, but my initial impression was to laugh, not to be actually interested in playing it.

I have to agree, the whole concept seemed so ludicrous that I initially dismissed it as parody.

Doesn't seem like a very good strategy, I must say.

Yeah, I definitely thought it was a parody for the longest time. In fact, it took a news site reporting one of ID's updates to convince me it wasn't a very well done joke. IMHO it went from a "rofl" to a "meh" as far as I'm concerned, but hey, if it comes out, I'll play it.

Yeah. I'm not the greatest fan of the name. I tried to get it changed when we discussed it the first time, but it didn't work out, so meh.

Intelligent Design is a more suitable name for the company making the mod, not the mod itself.
  • SwiftspearSwiftspear Custim tital Join Date: 2003-10-29 Member: 22097Members
It ties into the back story, they did much of the back story before there was a final title, and the title just seems to work unnaturally well.

This can only mean a good thing right? Ie motivate Flay and the gang to make NS better than intelligent design? or make it quicker?

Also, couldnt Flayra sue them on some level? (not that im into the whole compensation society!)
  • MouseMouse The Lighter Side of Pessimism Join Date: 2002-03-02 Member: 263Members, NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Squad Five Blue, Reinforced - Shadow, WC 2013 - Shadow
I imagine he could if he really wanted to. Personally I think that considering how close ID appears to be to NS as far as concept/genre goes; it'll serve as good competition. Thusfar to my knowledge, NS hasn't had anything in the way of sustained competition in the RTS/FPS genre. If we're lucky the presence of ID will influence the development of NS:S; making it a tighter (design wise) and more enthralling game than it would have perhaps been otherwise.

Guys. I'm right here. Ask me questions about stuff if you want. Don't refer to us as THEM, like we're THE EVIL ENEMY STEALING NS FROM IT'S RIGHTFUL OWNERS or something (it's not like RTS/FPS games didn't exist before NS, anyway). We're not trying to make an NS clone, the actual gameplay is gonna be quite different from NS. Think more Onslaught from UT2k4, it'll be a lot more defensive and teamwork based.
    Also, don't sue me. I need money to live <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />.

Diversity is good. With the NS servers count dwindling , Tremulous is the closest alternative - but it tends to be much more frustrating than NS (mostly due to camping marines , but the gameplay is broken on many levels anyway)

Obviously , Intelligent Design was a good name for viral advertising , but I'm wondering... are there any creationists in its dev team ? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

If anything, if this ever get's released, it will wind up being the generic brand of NS.

You have Frosted Flakes, and then you have "Krasdale Frosted Flakes"

    So, Natural selection, and "Intelligent Design" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Well, I do the site hosting/webmaster stuff, and I'm IRC Op, so it's actually funny when people come into our IRC channel thinking it's the ID theology-related, and my name doesn't help. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

However, I've sat back regarding this thread mostly because I don't want it to be about ID vs. NS. They are separate. Granted, a heck of a lot of "coincidence" on names and community members and such, but as I've seen where the gameplay is headed, and the overall look and feel to the mod, it definitely stands on its own. And yes, the site/forums aren't riddled with pics and in game shots and hot news bits (alot of design info is indeed available in the forums, but you have to have an account to see it), but alot of work is going on behind the scenes to lay the foundation of the game, as well as continual progress on all fronts.

Whatever your initial feelings on ID, I think over time it will stand on its own as a mod to be anticipated.
