Saw it earlier today, and it looks like it's being put to brilliant use on the Source engine. I loved Prey and all but I really wished I had dynamic control over those portals. God bless Valve.

That's the first thing I thought off when I heard about Portal. Is it actually made by the same people, since I remember the guy who made it (forgot his name - been too long!) said Valve was going to hire him (them?) or something along those lines.

Yep!
I got to actually go to VALVe this last november, in which I questioned about it, and the guy("Kelly", was his name) that its pretty top secret stuff. I like the direction they've gone with it too- the more humorous style is gonna be fun.
Must I save you fools from the horror of primitive low resolution video? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
The Trailer is now available over steam, for easily accessible highres video.
I love the humor of it all. At first the voice was a little awkward, but with lines like "If at first you do not succeed, you fail." how can you not love it? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
And don't bother asking, I can't say much of anything. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> One word: Multiplayer
Thats one thing you need to work on for that game now, figure something out. Anyhow it looks awesome so far... And I will have to buy HL2, (I haven't yet), just for Portal.
It's coming with this (Portal) TF2, and more HL2 action?! What could be better! Thats like three sweet games for $20.
And yeah, Portal seems like a pure 3d puzzle game. Where prey was an action game that used portals really well for atmosphere... but not so much for puzzles.

From what I understand, Portal is being bundled in with Episode 2. Episode 1 was a standalone product, so I can only assume Episode 2 (and the games bundled with it) will also be standalone. So no base HL2 to play Portal, though if you play Episode 2 itself, you'll probably want some background on whats happening.. so HL2 and Episode 1 are helpful in that regard =P

I'm really excited about this one, THEM. The best part, if you ask me at least, is seeing the physics involved with it all, which leads to one question:
In the final scene of the trailer, the character is in a infinite fall. Would moving out of the portal's range, and landing on 'solid' ground, hurt the player then? I assume the lack of any health signs would mean no, but that leaves other questions, such as "How do you tell when the guns are gonna kill you?".
Also, considering it is a puzzle game where you may indeed fail, is a quick-reload(instead of a full reload) being implemented?
And finally, I noticed that even when facing near walls, the DOF effect never changed. What would cause it to become more blurry, or less so?
<!--quoteo(post=1563381:date=Jul 19 2006, 07:04 PM:name=6john)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(6john @ Jul 19 2006, 07:04 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> im just hoping that portal will be incredibly long. if it were my way it would take at least forever to finish it. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> The only problem with that is what some that 80 people spend 5 years making can be consumed by one person in 20 hours. Multiplayer games last forever because developers quite cunningly get the players to play on the same map over and over again. Good luck doing that with a single player game, where suddenly it's frowned upon to recycle levels.

i'll probably be buying this... finally some fresh, intelligent. puzzle-style gameplay. excited about multiplayer possibilities too... not to mention the new technology in Source and what it could mean for NS:S (portal view through PGs anyone? D.O.F. effect on taking damage or getting parasited?)

I know, I know, but was just wondering if any one of those(I thought maybe the DOF one would be like this) would fall outside of the NDA. Ohwells, worth a try! XD
Way to go, THEM! You guys are really doing some great work over there. What can I say, I'm a bit jealous. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
