Good Doom 3 Mods For First Playthrough?

As if I don't make such "Marik wants everyone's opinion" threads often enough <!--emo&:p--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I *just* bought Doom 3 on impulse thanks to a sale that had it for $10. Given that it's from Carmack, I'm assuming the mod community went crazy with it while I wasn't paying any attention.

Any particular mods that make it look better, play with more realism and/or balance, or just be more fun?

Do all these flashlight mods I keep reading about wreck the balance & scare factor?

Are there any mods or console tweaks I can use to make the game look or perform better on a system with the following?

Athlon 2.16 GHz
ATI 9800 pro, 128mb
1.5 GB ram

    There was a big fuss that you had to put away your gun to use your flashlight (as a result, Q4 had flashlights taped onto the guns). I imagine that the flashlight mod let's you use the flashlight whilst a weapon is equipped.

    Personally, I think it kills a bit of the game to remove it. Do you go in guns blazing, hoping your muzzleflash lights up the room? Or do you take the ammo-friendly approach of spotting with your flashlight?

    For the record, at 640x480 with minimal detail, I never got above 20fps on the following setup:

    P4 3.2GhZ
    1GB RAM
    256Mb Radeon 9600 Sec.

    (Most likely the awful vid card that holds the system back. Formula 1 engine in a Mini chassis?)

    Oh, and ignore the nay-sayers who expected D3 to have the same impact as D1. It would *never* live up to the hype. Personally, I loved the blend of fright and brainless action- though I never played it properly as the PC can't handle it.
