Fps Problems.

<div class="IPBDescription">check in thread</div> well,I decided to try out NS again the other day,and I remembered one horrible fact from playing it...

normally,I get a nice 60 fps. on any map that is clear of people, just running around. But,in combat,my FPS drops down to about 5-10...Vsnyc or whatever that is is off,I'm running a 1.5ghz athalon (forgot the exact specs.) a radeon 9200 SE 128 mb. with fully updated drivers,512 megs. of ram,no spyware,no connection problems, and even my attempts to "optimize" NS through lowing graphics quality and messing with other stuff gives me more FPS for just walking around, but in terms of combat, still 5-10 FPS...

model stuff...
low poly stuff...5-10 in combat...
stock stuff...5-10 in combat...
anything custom...5-10 in combat...

I heard a long time ago ATI released a patch for the retail version of half-life 1 that fixed a problem like this, but I haven't had luck finding it,and it said it was for Half-life 1.6...a.k.a. back when WON was still around...

can anyone help,or had a similar problem and fixed it?!

Well... I don't know if ATI has the same problemas nVidia, but.... I use the video drivers that came with my computer. If I try to get the newest ones, NS runs at about 60 FPS, and i cant put my refresh rate beyond 75, and hl2 gets about 30 fps, where now, with my OLD drivers, my refresh rate is 120 hrx, i get a decent 60-70 fps in hl2, and a smooth 100 fps constant in NS -- All with my Geforce 4 ti 4200 4x agp.

So, try uninstalling your drivers with a cleaning tool, and installin some nice old drivers...?

If you lag around players/in action then it's a rate problem not a drivers problem.

I'd link you to my rate FAQ but it's still sitting in an unfinished text doc on my desktop. In the meantime I suggest you search previous threads as many people have had the same problem.

    - rate is the maximum data transfer rate (in bytes/s) you recieve from the server

    - cl_cmdrate is the number of packets per second you send to the server

    - cl_updaterate is the number of updates (or packets) per second you wish to recieve from server

These need to be set according to your particular connection AND according to the maxiumum values allowed by the server you are playing on.

Setting the rates changes the way your connection handles sending / receiving information from the server. If you have low rates you will send / receive less - but this is good for a lower connection so you don't overload it.

I have 4 MB cable internet and I use:
    rate 20000
    cl_cmdrate 80
    cl_updaterate 80

If you have a constant 60 fps, than that means you have vsync on, that card can handle full fps easy.
