Half-life 2 Refuses To Start

<div class="IPBDescription">Mods, too.</div> Sorry for posting a techie post in these forums... but I actually need some intelligent people to help me out here. (*Looks at Steampowered forums* >.>)

I went to steapowered.com and went through it's troubleshooting... useless.

Here's my problem: Whenever I try to join a server or start up a game, it freezes at the loading screen. Every time, with any server. Or whenever I try to start the game.

I have just reinstalled Steam and HL2 after my computer died. I have all the updates. *Sigh* I just want to play GMod..

Intel P4 2.8GHZ
1GB DDR Ram
Radeon 9800 128mb + Latest Catalyst drivers
Soundblaster Audigy 2 + Latest drivers

Please help - this is the only game that I can currently play on my fresh computer - and it doesn't work. I amd ying of boredom!

    Are you sure that it's not just taking a long time to load? I remember people saying that Garry's Mod kept crashing when they tried to load the map for the first time, but it was just taking a long time to set everything up.

    Wait like 5-10 minutes and see if it goes.

    The first time you open Gmod v8.3 or 8.3a, it takes hella long to load....


    You said HL2 doesent load either, but did you actually try to load a fresh singeplayer HL2?

    There is a problem relating to binding a button to toggle the console in configs. I don't remember what happenes when you do (but the game won't work) or how exactly you avoid the bug, but there should be some information on the Steam homepage (or failing that, on google). Might be worth checking out just in case.

    I got it working. It turns out I was just an impatient S.O.B.

    However, I keep getting "Memory cannot be 'read'" errors.

    I usually get those only in mods, but sometimes in Battlefield 2 and CS:Source... Happens to us all. How often do you get them?

    Basically I spawn into the game, move around for 5 seconds then get this error.

    I started HL2, and on the loading screen it froze. (I waited for 10 minutes. This is the loading screen before the game actually starts).

    I right click on HL2 under 'My Games' in Steam, and it says that it is only 91% complete and requires an update... but I can't.

    Once you do the validatey thing, if that doesn't work, there are some sort of files in some sort of folder that you can delete to fix some sort of problem. Trial and error will work for this.

    I tried the CFG thing and I followed the instructions. It didn't seem to do anything.

    I'll try Tycho's idea. What files am I looking for?

    I looked through HL2's folder... and most of the game is missing.. wow.

    I remember the good old day's of WON... if it's not broke, don't fix it.


    Edit: Having only 800mb in the HL2 folder is a bit odd, isn't it?

    No...i right click on my HL2 in the mygames list and it says 838mb and 100% updated and ready...

    Most of the games content isnt stored in the folders, its in the various gcfs...

    do a full uninstall... MANUALLY and also go thru and delete all other traces of the game

    then do the same to steam
