title

Is there a program that allows you to "fix" your monitor at a certain res so that perhaps a 1074x768 resolution a game supplies (which cannot be changed) gets *squeezed* down to 800x600?

Tape the edges of your screen with black tape.

    ...

Anyway, the game only emits 1024x768, so when your monitor only supports 800x600 you won't get to the point where you could use your trusty duct tape <.<

    RefreshForce, maybe?

How old is your monitor that it only supports 800 x 600? Did you have this thing back with your 286? Does it have color? SVGA?

It isn't me who has this problem.

I'm just doing research to help someone else.

:EDIT: RFForce only seems to deal with refresh rates... hmm.....

    *bump*

This is kinda urgent, the game is risking to lose players if such a program doesn't exist <.<

What game are we talking about here? Sometimes you can add commands to the command line of a game's shortcut and that can alter it's resolution. Or, try looking in any .cfg/.ini/etc files for resolutions.

    A 2D sprite based game.

And there is no cfg file for that game <.<

    Name is "NavyField".

Why not mess with the buttons on the monitor? That's what I did for some games [MUGEN], and when I exit the game it goes back to how it originally was.

The buttons are of no use when there is nothing seen.

I need a program that remakes the resolution on the fly, but with still acceptable fps <.<

So the game doesn't run in anything below 1024x768, and the monitor only supports 800x600. Well, the graphics card will have to output 800x600 pictures, nothing else will work. I see quite a problem with that if the game only outputs graphics in 1024x768 though. Methinks that a program that is capable of wedging itself inbetween the application and the graphics drivers might do the trick - assuming the game runs entirely in software mode. If the game uses the graphics card for rendering, the actual picture is produced in the graphics card (assumption on my part), and I guess you'd then have to persuade the graphics card to send the picture to another application that downscales it, then sends it BACK to the graphics card for display on the monitor. Argh, so complicated.

This is all pure speculation though, I'm just going by gut feeling.

You're probably better off finding a way to get the game to run in 800x600. Although, considering my experience with Navy Field, it won't do that. Maybe you should try the Navy Field forums instead?

Maybe I come here become the "nerd per lurker" density on the NF OT section is higher than on the NF boards?

I dont think its possible. NavyFields is a sprite based game. The sprites are drawn for a specific resolution. Even if you managed to force down the screen's resolution, the sprites wont scale down to fit.

Hmm, true. But a 1024x768 picture CAN be downscaled to 800x600. Pulling this off would be one hell of a hackjob though, I think. Not to mention that to get just 30fps, you'd have to run thirty pictures through some sort of 1024x768 -> 800x600 converter every second. Something tells me that if this guy only has a 800x600 monitor, his computer is likely to just BARELY be able to run NF at all. All this additional drain on the system resources would just kill it.

I think we can safely conclude that there are only two realistic options:

Ask the NF team to make an 800x600 version of their game.

Ask your friend to get a new monitor.

He isn't my friend, he's just a random guy I'm trying to help <.<

And I already told him about the (if such a tool even exists) FPS issues.

    ^^
