Well that sure is odd. The board made my topic, but the post was erased. Good thing I had it copy & pasted. The SQL server must've died right after it made a topic, but before it made the actual post. Which is **** backwards from the way a proper forum should be coded :X

Anyway, here's the post:
[/edit]

Most of you have probably heard already, but <a href='http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_543~99713,00.html' target='_blank'>AMD has filed against Intel</a> claiming illegal antitrust activity from Intel.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->As reported on GrokLaw, AMD has just filed an antitrust lawsuit against Intel. AMD states in its press release that the complaint details "... how Intel has unlawfully maintained its monopoly in the x86 microprocessor market by engaging in worldwide coercion of customers from dealing with AMD. It identifies 38 companies that have been victims of coercion by Intel - including large scale computer-makers, small system-builders, wholesale distributors, and retailers, through seven types of illegality across three continents."<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Today Intel's europeon branches were raided too:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->"As part of the ongoing antitrust investigations, EU officials have raided Intel offices as well as offices of a number of IT firms manufacturing or selling computers. This follows the recent ruling by Japan's Fair Trade Commission declaring Intel's exclusionary practices illegal as well as the lawsuit filed by AMD."<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Before you jump the gun, this isn't AMD crying that they can't get a market share. They are claiming activity by Intel that, if they can prove it, is really damn illegal. Activities include illegal discounting practices (note the keyword illegal), threatening companies for doing business / considering doing business with AMD, trying to rig industry standards, and also intentionally degrading performance of AMD cpus when programmers (like, oh, game programmers) use Intel based compilers. Very big claims indeed, I hope for AMD's sake they have proof to back them up.

If you have some time, read the <a href='http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/AMD-Intel_Full_Complaint.pdf' target='_blank'>actual legal complaint</a> AMD filed. It's suprisingly interesting for a court document. And if even a quarter of the stuff in it is true, then Indel does indeed owe some reperations to AMD, and the computer industry as a whole, including us consumers. After all, monopolies are bad for us, because it keeps innovation low and prices high.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of this.

/me queues line of 'olo AMD sucks' and 'olo Intel sucks' and the obligatory Microsoft references

    That is all.

I really hope it's true. If only to protect AMD from a false allegations counter-suit.

    Oh,

    Intel Intel lol

This topic has been DOOMed, by DOOM.

That said, when I read this on /. earlier it said that the compiler looks for the CPUID as either Genuin Intel, or Authentic AMD, and if it's AMD it automatically emulates most of the SSE stuff, that AMD supports by the way.

If the compiler is fooled into compiling code from an AMD as if were on a P4 through some hackery, things run fine, and the code runs much better without having to emulate the calls.

It would be one thing if it did somthing on the AMD CPU's because they didn't factor in people using AMD CPU's, but the compiler looks for "Authentic AMD" and then makes slower code.

I dislike Intel even more now.

It will indeed be intresting to see how it turns out and if any of the claims are true.

And on a side note how is it **** backwards to create the thread then the post seeing as in the database each post contains a refrence to which thread it belongs to and making the post before the thread would only make things hard and create more querys to the database

Taking my own thread off topic. Oh noes. ^_^

You're right. For some dumb reason I was thinking a post would be a foreign key in the thread's row, not the other way around. I blame it on it being 12:30AM at time of post and me being tired.

    Wow, DOOM got pwnt.

On topic: Woah, if those turn out to be true, that...wow thats evil.

How much could this hurt Intel though? Like, a fine? Imprisoning of top officials? What're we looking at here?

If it doesn't settle out of court, then at least fines. Perhaps even sanctions against them or even splitting them up, but that is very doubtful.

If AMD has a shred of evidence then most likely this will settle out of court.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me wish out of court settlements weren't possible. Screw money changing hands under the table - if they've broken the law and screwed over competitors and consumers then they should get taken down, hard.

[edit]Someone already called doom out o_O[/edit]

On the case: Yes, AMD will see drastic falls in all areas if they don't pull this one out right. "Never point a weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot," has some bearing on this topic.

I doubt this is something AMD is doing just for the heck of it and hope for the best.

They have probably been preparing this for years and most likely have at least some concrete evidence.

I really doubt AMD would take the chance of shooting themselves in the foot.
