Like the title of this post says, I've extracted the Hammer editor from the Source SDK and now I can run it without loading up Steam. As far as I know no one has done this yet (at least that I've seen) so I'm going to post instructions if anyone is interested. Sorry if you guys knew about this, but just thought that I would share for those of us who didn't know. I was going to put this in Off-Topic but I think Hammer pertains more to Mapping then to Off-Topic, don't you think?

now all we have to do is to find out how to extract our favourite mods out of steam
Steam does not want to be installed on it for some reason...

OK, I have the tutorial showing how to do it in case anyone is interested. You can find it at http://bacontheory.ba.funpic.org/hammerextract.htm.
i was expecting a much more complex solution.
By the way, Hammer wasn't so much made by Valve but assumed by Valve. It hasn't changed that much since WorldCraft, so that's why I don't think Valve can technically be said to have created it.

thats easy, use gcfscape to extract all the necessary files for the mod in question.
when valve "attempted" to make backwards compatibility with hl1, they just jumbled everything together, and that made it hard to sort everything out to use right.
problems with 4.x when making hl1 maps
- the grid isnt resized to match hl1's 8192x8192x8192 grid limit (im not sure if hl can have maps bigger than that, never tried to compile outside of those boundries)
- the textures and materials are in the same dialog box nomatter what engine your mapping for.
- on 3.5, when you make a new map or open an existing map, you have a dialog box open to choose which mod you want to map for, in 4.x you have to go into prefrences and manually change that, then restart hammer.
- you can still use that patch tool (to make mountains and landscape) with hl1, it should be disabled because it doesnt work properly.
