I realize my comment is going to be nigh-to-useless, but in my experience, a plain case with good airflow and decent sound insulation is a significantly better bet.

The second one is way sexier. I have no clue about specs / airflow / sounds isolation etc though.

It's entirely possible to have good airflow and sound insulation in a windowed case. Mine is a very good example, as it has 10 fans blowing at any given time and is less than an armslength away. Yes I can sit here and talk on the phone while it's running.

I like the looks of the second one, but I would buy neither without good airflow. For the most part, a case can be made quiet by using quiet fans, but airflow is a must. Also, is all the flashyness really worthwhile? I went for a case like the first one when I first made my computer, because it looked great, but have since bought a new case for its functionality. Some features, thumbscrew everything, thick construction, no plastic body, and adequate cooling are all really useful, and are sometimes overlooked in fancy looking cases.

Don't go for those futuristic cases. They're just all show. Go for something nice, and more future proof:

I find them a bit poserish anyway, a bit over the top... of course in RL i might be too busy drooling to say that but while its safely locked away behind a screenshot I can sneer and stroke my plain but beautiful case.

Go for a Lian-Li case. Like the V1000

Better quality, better airflow, and sex.

Don't do what i did and go for one of those tacky plastic cases, however "cool" they look.

Go for a classy case, neons and megatuning is only fugly.

Stuff like a Lian-Li, an Antec Sonata, is much better looking in my opinion.
• RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
I'm going to the 'Plain with good airflow' bandwagon here.

Of course, you could just buy mentioned case and mod it without mucking up the airflow.
But then again....not everyone is a good craftsman *points at self*

I always thought of case mods as extremely pointless...

But anyway while were on the topic does anyone know if they make custom cases for huge-gantic work pcs?

Don't bother putting aesthetics first, unless you are planning on spending half of your life at LAN parties, and the other half working out how to cool them properly.

Go for a good, heavy duty case, which has a PROVEN airflow system, like the CM Stacker. You can fit a whole stadium full of fans in there, and still have enough room for all the normal gubbins.

I used to have nothing but window cases, but that is all changed now, after upgrading a few notches. I now have a CM WaveMaster, which is both pure sex on feet, and the heaviest, empty, case that I've had to lift, after the CM Stacker, of course...
You can't beat 2mm think aluminium for sound-proofing. I've also got some acoustic dampening crap just lying about, which I could fit in there, but the case does enough for dampening as it is...

Many window cases are just sold on the premise that a window makes the case. It doesn't. Check the metal used for the case, SECC alloy is the standard, it's cheap, and doesn't do too much against sound. Look for either an aluminium, or a steel one. Good alu cases are the WaveMaster, and the Stacker (I think it uses alu, anyhoo...) Good steel cases are the Jeantech Trinity, and the Phong. Don't even think of modding the steel cases, as they eat Dremel discs for breakfast...

Also, invest in some air filters for the case fans, if the case doesn't already come with them. That's another sign of a well designed case, dust filter mounting points...

Well, I know there's one store here (Finland) that'll ship some amount of P180's in the beginning of July. And there's another larger store which is also taking pre-orders right now, or so I heard. I can't imagine it taking much longer for them to land in the US/UK/zone X.

Not really.

As for the topic:

I think you should buy a slightly plain yet cool looking one. My friend has a super shiny black one that is really hot. I think if you're getting a flashy one with lots of light and stuff you need to at least be able to say that you made it yourself.

Word of advise if you're going to buy a full tower case consider if you're going to be moving a lot. If you go to LAN parties more than once a month then I'd suggest either getting a smaller case or one that has wheels (I'd suggest the wheels, I had a friend who would ride his computer around the LAN party before setting up). On that note I think I'm going to start planning out my next PC mod, the Go-Kart/PC.
