always wanted to animate for games; working mainly in broadcast work for the last few years. Problem is I don’t know the first thing about getting started in animating with half life or HL2. i use Maya and know it can be used for these jobs. i really don’t want to start using a new app. I taken a look at some of the ns models in HL model viewer and want to set about reworking some of the animations just to have ago at animating this kind of thing. I been reading round the internet but never found anything solid on how i go about opening the skeleton in Maya to animate. i understand milkshake will have to come into the equation some place. i am not however familiar with this application. To simplify this post i will ask the following questions;
1) is it possible to animate HL1 and HL2 (ie ns) models in Maya to rework certain animation sequences.
2) HOW! where’s the best place to start looking for information, can anyone help me out directly or knows of anyone who can? Information on HL1 and HL2 would be appreciated.
please help <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

might show you what you can do, the other opstion is make a comic strip by imprting NS models into the HL source version of Garrys mod, or use NS models to make a CGI movie like intro and outro to this movie here

reguardless,I think there might be a model importer for maya convert HL1 and HL2 models to a maya controllable format.
and if your gonna use NS models,you'll probably wanna ask the NS team for permission...normally they'll give it to ya,unless your planning calling them your own...

1. Yes.
2. <a href='http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/' target='_blank'>Grab milkshape.</a> Use it to decompile the .mdl file. Get a .smd maya importer/exporter -plugin. And I'm sure you know what to do next.
Happy animating. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That was kind of a useless post. It's better to ask in here or some HL website than in those. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I got milkshape and decompiled the modles
i managed to install a plug in for maya that allows you to import SMDs.
however when i import a smd file i can only see the bone struture (is there a way to see the whole modle). and once it is imported the animation does not play anyhow. grrrrrrrr but i am getting closer than ever before.
when i try import the somthign that says xxxx_ref.smd ig et strange errors ;
Enter the new time: // Warning: problem creating smd weight map template //
// Error: The source attribute 'place2dTexture1.mirror' cannot be found. //
oh and onle last rather strange poblem the bone struture is orantated in the wrong manner so that it is pointing down. whats with that?
can anyone help with the above probelms
