OLOLOLO IM OFF IN A WEEK
Well, I finally am switching out of the dreaded ISP. It was confirmed today, as the new DSL package(SBC Yahoo DSL, pro package- 1.5mbs-3.0mbs down). I'm going to be thrilled to be using Firefox alone(without having 2 browsers open), Trillian/Integrity Messenger, and generally having more RAM free to dedicate to my games.

Wish meh lucke!!!111onebaconolo

You've made the switch, awesome job. I remember when I used to have AOL, damn those days, but I learned about Instant Messaging through it.

Note:

By no means am I "nub" or not know the bad things of AOL. I've known them for years- even before I had the internet I knew why AOL was bad.

Sadly, parents are idiots. I don't mean mine. I mean any parents. Yeah. K. Except KungFuSquirrel.

This calls for celebration.... anyone up for a sacrificial burning of the accursed AOL free trial offer disk?

Have you already removed all of AOL's junk off of your computer? If not...

1) Uninstall it.
2) Make sure it's uninstalled. Seriously.
3) Check one more time. Trust me, it's out to get you.
4) Clean your registry with a good, trusty program.
5) If you have any program that can list running processes (like some Windows task managers), then check your list of processes for remnants and other weird looking stuff. Google processes that you're not familiar with.
6) Look up your service list, and do a little research to help you disable naughty services.
7) Msconfig is your friend.
8) Any other stuff I forgot.

Or, there's the easy way:

1) Obtain boot disk.
2) format C:

There's a good chance that you already know to do the stuff that I mentioned. If so, you have a head start. However, I just wanted to be sure. I know this because while I've never had AOL on my machine, I did have AIM at one point... a two megabyte program that managed to mangle my registry and latch on extra processes despite my caution. That said, you made the smart choice: Trillian is the way to go.

We've made a sport around here of free trial frisbee baseball. It's hard to hit those suckers with a decent blow, but when you get a good toss WHAM! into a thousand pieces, and whenever you want more, just go to pretty much any technology store and there's 800 more! Yay.

AOL is the most horrible crap ever. I remember you would get "reported" and thrown off, it's like WTH am I even paying for this for?! One time I remember getting kicked off for my racism in calling someone "white trash"

Most of the complaints I've read involves them slowly throttling down the bandwidth. Of course, I had the lowest speed available (384/128), so it wasn't like they could really do that to me.

if you have trouble connecting, I'm sorry, but your protocol stack got hosed by AOL. I saw it all the time when I did internet tech support. Just make sure you go in and remove all the AOL protocols and your regular TCP/IP protocol. Then reinstall he TCP/IP protocol from your windows disk.

I am sorry for the years of AOL you have faced.

I can only hope broadband makes up for it (at least somewhat).

We've had cable for a long time, but my parents won't get rid of that monster. Consider yourself very lucky.

Don't burn the CD. Put it in the microwave instead.

I guess you'll just have to find a Yiffy roleplay channel on IRC now or something.

Actually a marching band in my city used AOL trial CDs as props. They were trying to use the backside for some shiny effect.
The band still sucked though.

Congrats on getting off AOL. I remember for me it took forever to cancel cause my parents were also idiots and would agree to 100 more hours of free internet blah blah blah...
Cable is one of the best things that happened to my life next to Mint Chocolate Ice Cream.

I don't know. I've just seen it happen on Mythbusters, and the results were pretty awesome (bits of CD sparking and flying off the disc).
