Hitreg Issues.

Playing on Lunixmonster many of our regs have complained about some serious hitreg problems. The server already has bloated marine vs alien win/losses on the alien side and we really don't need marines less able to shoot things. No real idea when this started, but certian people have been complaining about it for a while. I only knowticed more recently myself, but it seems as if it may have gotten worse recently, as several people are now complaining about it.

Server is running on a windows 2000 box, and running adminmod with nearly no plugins. Any ideas for a potential cause would be much appreciated.

sv_maxupdaterate and ticrate? Overall server load? Optimal game experience would be with a server side updaterate and ticrate ~100.

players generally never use more than 8 kb of data a second total inbound and outbound, unless your playing ns_siege005_006 where all of those models are flying around the readyroom, then it tends to spike up to 30 kb a second. so a sv_maxrate of 8192 would work fine.

as for sv_minrate, you want to have it relatively low, 2kb a second is good for dialup users, any higher and it will make them choke from forcing too much data to them. so sv_minrate 2048

for the sys_ticrate, thats variable depending on your server size. a small server will work fine at 100, but if your dealing with alot of players, 300-500 sys_ticrate is average. any lower, and your clients will start experiencing un-needed ping increases. any higher, and you will start having server cpu issues. although small servers do benefit from having the ticrate set to 300, it knocks a few ms off everyones ping.

a very bad contributer to hitreg issues is the mm_hlbooster plugin. it was not designed for steam use, it was built on the old won system. the best way to use this plugin is to not use it at all, because there is a very narrow range of settings that will actually benefit your server. if you dont have the settings tweaked right, it will only cause peril.

if you must use it, use it only in moderation, and dont set it to some rediculous number like 1000. a server framerate that high just eats your servers cpu for breakfast and will cause it to become highly unstable with even a few people connected. a server fps rate of 200-300 is ok. but keep in mind that hlbooster tells the server to keep that framerate, so when things get spammy in a map, the server has to work A LOT harder than it normally will with normal settings.

What tool would you recommend GiG other than HLbooster, flash trick/media player?
