But before i switched over I used the google toolbar and it worked great. Something like 500 popups blocked in the few months of use.
It even blocks some popups associated with "3rd party software" that could decide to install itself on ur poor compy.
As for the tweaks and settings...

Go into internet options and make sure it prompts you for EVRYTHING. And if you know something about internet controls, and you see something in prefrences that dosen't look kosher, turn it off and see if anything's broke.
Does IE have a problem with opening .pdf files? My sister was just trying to open one and it just displayed some image, but when I pasted the link in FireFox it worked fine.
Spybot: Search and Destroy has a helpful systray program that "immunizes" Internet Explorer's various security issues. The Internet Options is a good place to tighten up security, too. However, there are times where even the greatest efforts for security don't work as planned, which is why frequent sweeps (especially after using Internet Explorer) of Adaware are important.
oh and apparently some of you don't really get it. I'm not asking for alternatives, I have my own reasons for not using Opera, Mozilla, Maxthon (never even heard of it, tbh), and such. I'm asking on how to fix IE up so that it can be as well-protected or whatever as the other browsers. thanks to those who answered, i'll look into that.

Errr you want IE to be as secure as those browsers mentioned with tweaks?
Well, I'm not quite sure on how to tweak it, but I do know that most of the solutions involve third-party solutions, such as popup-blockers and ad-blockers.
