    I just replayed HL2 on hard, using the npc_create and notarget command to create a few random combine encounters, using between 3 and 10 soldiers and possibly a couple of citizens for some AI on AI fights.

    In open areas and over long distances, the AI works okay. It's not very bright, but at that kind of range it doesn't really matter because you wouldn't be jumping around much in real life either.
    In confined quarters, things get ugly, though. Once they notice you, they start shooting. If you retreat behind a corner, one of two things can happen:
    a) they follow you and run straight into whatever trap you might've prepared, or
    b) they do nothing whatsoever.
    I'm not sure which one is worse. I also found that they react very poorly to things happening around them. If one of their friends in their line of sight dies, what do they do? They raise their weapons in some sort of ready pose that essentially does nothing anyway.

    In conclusion, yes, I'd say they are pretty stupid. The least I would expect is some sort reaction if they hear gunfire or, God forbid, see people get killed around them. I don't think it's too much to ask for that they throw grenades into rooms or around corners where you hide, at least when they clearly saw you go there, instead of blindly charging in with guns blazing into God knows what. I'd also like to see them use cover better, so they just don't stand there and shoot at you until you're dead, move out of sight or they die. I did some tests in rooms with plenty of cover, such as pillars, and they seemed to think it was more of a bother than an advantage.

    The HL2 combine AI needs "hint nodes", which are placed by the mapper when the level is made. Putting combine soldiers in a random area will make them pretty stupid(although they can still take cover behind things and stuff without any hint nodes).
    And the monsters need to be in the same "squad", which is also defined by the mapper, to react to eachothers actions/observations. Otherwise they won't react to something a friend of theirs does, at all.

    <!--QuoteBegin-Mad Man+Jun 7 2005, 02:20 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Mad Man @ Jun 7 2005, 02:20 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> You know on the note that the PPU will use a 4x pci-e slot, I have yet to come across a mobo with a 4x slot o.O <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Well it will originally use a PCI slot, but ive seen like 2 mobos with a 4x slot (nForce 4 Ultras) and if anything deserves the bonus bandwidth to the cpu, its a ppu.

    Just a guess though <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
