Need Help With My Ping Problem.

It jumps from 20 to over 700
Obviously a ping that unstable is unplayable. My ISP recently forced me to use the pppoe protocol and since then NS has become unplayable. I need your help to fix the problem. My pings would normally be between 20 and 50. I ask if there is anything I can do to fix this problem other than changing ISP'S.

Well, I'd try the Tech Support forum first.

I'm not really familiar with PPPoE, but I'd guess it's time to switch ISPs. =P

    NS only or all games?

It seems to be just NS.

Check your rates? You said you used to have 20-50, what is it now.

    My rates are cl_updaterate 30, cl_cmdrate 50, and rate 2500.

Assuming you're using broadband, your rate setting should be 20000.

I just tried setting my rate that high now it jumps to over 1000. It seems to get worse when someone uses the voice comm though.

May not be related, but I have a rural DSL and sometimes I ran at 60-70, sometimes spiked to 500+ constantly. Rates were no good ot change. Do a speed test outside of NS (http://performance.toast.net) and see if it fluctuates, stays high, or stays low. If you consistenly have high bandwidth in the test, and the rest of your internet apps look good, then it's NS related. Try a complete removal/reinstall of NS and/or Steam, and do not copy your config in, manually re-set it up.

If your bandwidth is always low, you may not be able to play on it. If it fluctuates (sometimes 200-300 kbps, other times 800+), you may have spyware or other factors. I had cleaned off ALL my spyware/viruses/etc, and still no go. I reformatted everything, and it's all good now.

Good luck and hope it helps.

BTW, for spyware remover, X-Block (free)
    For AntiVirus: AVG Free Edition.

EDIT: I've also heard that changing your rate to something with zeros at the end (20000), sometimes Steam truncate a 0 and it becomes 2000. Some people recommend typing a rate of 9999 or 19999 to be safe. Not verified, but I do it just in case.
