I used the physics in HL2 a lot without the grav gun, picking up barrels for cover mainly. Amazingly useful and effective, especially when approaching a set up gun. I assume that once AOE3 comes out, people will find other ways to use the physics system. I can'tthink of any at the moment, but I never thought of chucking bricks off heights onto Combine either, before I started playing HL2.
And KFS is right. Not many sequels completely overhaul the game. Homeworld 2 was essentially Homeworld with an easier interface (the camera and build menus were my main problem with Homeworld) and better graphics. HL2 is HL but bigger with better graphics. Homeworld 2 and Half Life 2 are great games.
If AOE3 turns out to be AOE2 with better graphics, who loses? No one, that's who. And you can't blame the website for promoting Graphics as a major selling point, because it's the buyers who are taken in by such points. You've got to remember that, to most of the people who will end up buying a game, "Graphics" and "Awesome weapons" are major attractions. The companies just market to the largest audience is all.

Innovation is good and all, but for every game that "defines a new generation", there is an innovative game that absolutely sucks. AOE2 was a brilliant game, as was AOE3. I can't see how this game will fail if they stick to their winning forumla, and only add a few major changes.
As for the graphics, they are bloody superb. They are, without a doubt, the main selling point for me. Having superb, innovative gameplay is all well and good. However, i want shadows, physics, beautiful landscapes and highly detailed charactors more than i want an innovative yet graphically boring game.
With any luck, AOE3 will be a combination of them both.

Another RTS that'll play like every other RTS out there. Get res fast. Build up 10,000 units. Crush enemy easily with mixture. Repeat until you win. It's frightening when it takes you 5 mins to build advanced stuff, and ur RA2 friend builds about 700 good units in that time....
