Looking To Set Up My Own Server

<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone reccomend a hosting company?</div> Hi,
I'm interested in setting up my own 16 person NS server. I've read through various topics on this server subforum, but I have a few questions.

Would it be easier to set up a server on my own and run it through my ISP?
Or would it be better to rent a server from a hosting company?

I did a little google searching, and VSK Gaming Servers has the lowest monthly price for a 16 man ns server.
<a href='http://www.vskgamingservers.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.vskgamingservers.com/</a>
Has anyone hosted an ns server from them before? Any complaints?

Thanks!

If your box and your connection can handle it, set your own up - I did! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

OK, VSK is a bad idea. I'm about to upgrade my current computer, how would a 1.6 ghz athalon xp handle a server? I've got a gig of ram and a geforece 4 in the box right now. Would I have to check my isp's terms of service or something?

depends hardware wise with a bit of tweaking that would be fine but what sort of con are u on?

Ya, the server sounds like it should be able to handle NS fine, but it will depend on your connection like others have said. I've run small servers to test from my home connection (in Toronto area, Canada), and we just don't have the constant bandwidth required to keep a nice and smooth server running. The bandwidth is just not constant enough and in most cases this sort of activity is breaking the contract between you and your ISP.

If you have the money, want a good player base, and want to be one of the best servers out there, screw your home computer/connection and fork out money to rent a dedicated game server off of a good hosting company. Don't always go for the cheapest price with this though, as this usually turns out to be a really poor quality server.

Out of curiousity, where do you live? Where would you want the server located? Close to you? In the US? Canada? Australia? Find out where you would want a dedicated server housed and start looking for companies that host in a datacenter in that area. You want to find hosting companies that have datacenters hooked in to major Internet backbones as to improve performance for most users across the country of server location.

I had a thread about some server hosting companies started a little while ago, you can view it below. People have posted who they use as there provider...gives you a place to start...

Thanks alot! I live in the Washington DC metro area, so I should be able to find a data center around here. I'll have to look into what kind of bandwitdh I'm alloted, I'm on a cable connection through RCN.
I got into this because the server I regularly play on never has an admin on, and there's no way to contact the owner. So latley, there have been alot of bad stuff going on. It got visited by myg0t, no one follows the rules etc. I'd like ot be able to control whats going on, so I'm setting up a server. Is it better to pay monthly or annualy?

I've been using <a href='http://www.bfgservers.com' target='_blank'>BFGSERVERS</a> for about 2 years now. They've been very good. No complaints at all.

i would just go look up some reputable server companys (server matrix or griffinrun) these "trunk-slammers-are-us" guys could be trying to rip you off. all they give you is an email address. no website or other contact info, so they could basically run off with your money.

yea i had a friend that tried some advertised server like that, he got shafted and lost about $150
