MANCHESTER -- Police said it took eight staff members and a police officer to subdue an out-of-control resident of the Easter Seals home at 200 Zachary Road, who assaulted a staff member Wednesday evening.

Warren Washington, 18, was arraigned in Manchester District Court yesterday on felony charges of first-degree assault and criminal restraint, as well as eight misdemeanor charges of simple assault and one of resisting arrest.

According to the affidavit filed in support of the arrest, Washington was angry because he wasn't able to use a video game system and punched a wall. He was told to take a "time away" in a separate room and later went to his own room, standing in the doorway.

Unit Supervisor Kelly Ann McGrade said she walked over to Washington and asked if he wanted to talk, now that he was calm.

McGrade told police Washington grabbed her and shoved her into the room, knocking her down. He allegedly shut the door and kicked a walkie-talkie out of her hand, to prevent her from calling for help, and proceeded to punch her in the face, grab her by the throat, get on top of her and punch her several more times.

He then grabbed a stereo system in the room and threw it at her head, before punching her in the face again, police said. Then, McGrade told police, Washington picked her up and spun her around before throwing her against the wall, while she screamed for help and begged him to stop

Washington is 6 feet tall and weighs 240 pounds. McGrade is 5-foot-3 and weighs 110 pounds.

Two staff members, Linda Robinson and Scott Cassin, responded to McGrade's screams and were also punched and shoved by Washington, who also swung a speaker wire with wood attached to it at Cassin, police said.

According to the affidavit, it took eight staff members and the police officer to subdue Washington and put him in handcuffs.

Easter Seals Chief Operating Officer Christine McMahon yesterday said McGrade, Robinson and Cassin were treated at the Elliot Hospital and released.

She said at no time was there any risk to anyone outside the secure Zachary Road residence. She praised the efforts of the staff and the Manchester Police Department, saying, "They were very responsive."

In court yesterday, bail for Washington was set at $50,000 cash/corporate surety. Because no plea can be entered to a felony in District Court, a probable cause hearing was set for May 11. Trial on the nine misdemeanor charges was set for June 28.

McMahon said she expects Washington to be evaluated by medical personnel and that there will be a competence hearing.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I know Kelly McGrade. I have Jiujitsu class with her. I also saw her tonight. I'm very, very angry.

It seems that the Easter Seals considers the amount of state funds coming in from Mr. Washington more important than the safety of its female staff. You see, Mr. Washington has a former history of assaulting female supervisors, including an incident where he almost choked one to death.

The Easter Seals, I was told by Kelly, are working hard as possible to keep Mr. Washington out of prison. Mr. Washington has a "disorder" known as "Explosive Violent Outburst Disorder." This qualifies him for special treatment. Apparantly, it makes it ok that he almost murdered someone 3 times smaller than him. This girl looks like a fricken TOOTHPICK. Hell, she IS a toothpick.

I was also informed that Kelly has been given no right to defend herself at the school. She isn't even allowed to push back when hit. She is not allowed to carry any mace, pepper spray, etc. There are no cameras. No real security personnel. Only teaching staff.

Oh, the best part is, they've told her that when he comes back, he's going right back under her supervision, if she's still in her current position. Their solution: "we'll provide more male staff."

I'm sickened, absolutely sickened.

Also, Kelly said that Mr. Washington's actual weight was somewhere nearer to 300 lbs.

Edit: Just thought I should also mention that the stereo was shattered.

that's pretty insane... you should write to your local paper or something, that news article isn't telling the whole story...

she should be given a tazer... or carry one anyways. She would welcome the legal battle after using it compared to getting ripped to shreds by a mass of muscle with no brain.

As someone from our class put it:

"Best to be judged by twelve, not carried by six."

I'm really angry that the Easter Seals is going to use their legal team to make it seem that an obvious Sociopath is incompetent to stand trial. From everything that I've been told about Mr. Washington, it seems like he should have been jailed 6 months ago or more. He's had an extremely violent history with women, especially with those in power over him.

Why is it that every violent, criminal psychopath seems to have a "psychic disorder" when it comes to court. Just because they have such a disorder doesn't make them less dangerous.

In germany a guy raped and killed 2 small children... now it seems he's gonna go to a clinic because of that flipping disorder.... oh god save him if he gets into public...

It may be fair that a confirmable mental disorder saves you from legal prosecution - but it should not save you from consequences. Someone who is prone to random outbursts of extreme violence cannot be treated like a normal member of society, because he isn't. If there is a considerable risk that you injure those around you, you need to prevented from that - with straightjacket and an inch of steel between you and others, if necessary.

    So...what are the Easter Seals?

Some left wing ideologies essentially take any responsibility away from people.

I personally hope she does well on Wednesday, which is the hearing date. The thing that sucks is that she'll be fighting her own company, which is the real issue. The company is using Politically Correct crap to make sure that the huge amount of cash coming in from the state stays just as huge. It's ultra-greedy capitalism (not the norm in most capitalist countries) combined with the worst aspects of liberalism.

I know that I'll not be supporting the Easter Seals. I'm tempted to start writing some letters to the editor about the Seals, as well as writing to the Easter Seals itself.

It's sad that they've become corrupt, and that the money is more important than the mission.

    "Explosive Violent Outburst Disorder"?

Surely that just means the guy has an attitude problem?

B/c thats not the purpose of jails/prisons. At least nice sinc the late 19th century.

Thats the job of other rehabilitive institutions.

And if you had the choice of sending him to prison or somewhere else you wouldnt want to send him to the prison b/c their rehabilitive programs are way underfunded and dont really work.

I begin to think back about the good old days of my grandparents where they would have just taken him out back to the woodshed, beat the crap out of him for doing that, then thrown him in jail no questions asked, not this "oh well, he has a disease" crap we deal with today. People make the lamest frickin excuses.

A good point, but this guy doesn't really have a disorder at all. He just has some serious issues with women. The fact that he's extremely violent also says that he needs to be removed from society. He's a menace to the public. Prison's the best place for people with his attitude.
