My first games of the patch
Greets all, just played my first game with the patch tonight.

Picked randomly, ended up with marines. This first game I was in got wrapped up quickly enough. It was mid-way through and we got HAs mere moments after I arrived. The GL seems like its at nice power level. A full ammo belt of it will clear out most hallways of alien towers. Well, cleared out the hallways I used it on. I think they might have had Gorges running in the back repairing stuff. It was hard to tell.

I hope all the HA I saw was a result of a well-managed team and not the "resource bug" rearing its head in 1.01. The resource bug was not mentioned in the patch notes, so I'm beginning to wonder. Although, I would like to say that I was only ever given one(1) suit of HA and a GL. I never died after I got mine. So maybe marines were just conserving resources really well.

Right, well, long story short, marines win, new game starts. Old marine comm goes over to the aliens. This was an interesting bit of foreshadowing. Marines lost the second match.

We managed to break their third hive right as Onos came up. Killed the only Onos. Built a second base at the hive. Things were good, sort of. Then the new commander that was doing an ok job stepped down. I think it might have been his first time in real combat, but he was doing fine.

The commander that replaced him though... Oh boy. He had *certainly* never seen the inside of a command pod. We must have had almost 200 RPs before everything went down the tubes. Lost resourcers one by one. Lost our first base. We ended up holed up in the last hive, still with quite a few RPs, but only one resource tower.

Then we get yet another commander.

Who builds us 9 brand new turrets. *sigh*

Well, at least the commander is more than a HA dispenser/turret placer in this new patch.

But wait, there's more! Perhaps up to this point, the alien team wasn't really ever showing thier true power. I had met a few of the new fades, but since I had always met them singly, they hadn't seemed like much. Sure, they were scary and all, but we had a semi-smart group of marines. We traveled in packs like good little soldiers do. One fade cannot stand against a few good marines.

Then the fades all got smart too. I calculated the damage potental on 3 fades all shooting acid rockets. It's 180 DPS of area damage. You remember those 9 shiny new turrets, yes? Gone in 20, maybe 30 seconds. And I don't think we killed even a one as they marched into our hive base and started redecorating. The changes to the acid rocket almost doubled its damage per second. Was it really that weak before? Impressions? Faders?

So, anyway, that's my first couple games with the patch. Sorry about the length and the rambling, but my thoughts and questions are not the most orginized of things. I tell myself they're more amusing that way. Also, I'm not complaining about anything, just noting the couple of things that popped into my mind as I was at both ends of the ownage.

Finally, to end things on a positive note, great job with both NS and the patch folks. I foresee many wasted hours with this beauty of a mod. Keep up the good work.

Short version of post: HA important. Commander important. Acid rocket owie. Good patch. Orgo like.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The marines need a good (not mediocre, good) CO to win now. A bad CO is a recipe for disaster.

    So,

Other than being a "perfect" CO, how does one learn but to screw up in games? For all those who are experienced and perfect CO's, did you not make mistakes, costly and very deadly mistakes when you first started?

I've already seen both good and bad CO's (trust me I hate marines but have had to accept that I can't be in my preferred team every game). Yes I've tried to be one for about 3 minutes before I logged out and someone else gladly took over, I'm not one who is good at RTS's, thus I leave that prison box to whomever wants it. Its much easier following orders (both good and bad) and dealing with the results.

    Take care all

    Quite true, quite true.

Taking on the role of commander is an incredible burden. Win or lose, treat those newer commanders with respect. If it seems like someone took over just to screw with the game, by all means, let them have both barrels, but if they seem to be a new commander, thank them for attempting a usually thankless job. Learning in most team games is easy. You screw up, no one really notices, life goes on. Potential new commander screws up, and suddenly they've got 5 or so other people yelling at them. Sometimes actually with voice.

So help nurture our future commanders! Join the TSA adopt-a-commander program today!

(The other programs that were compeating for the funding were adopt-a-turret and adopt-a-heavy-machine-gun. This sounded the most "humane" to our marketers.)

I'm not saying new commanders deserve to be kicked in the teeth, but they do tend, for the most part, to lose.

    I hate commanding

    I do

I know how well, but I can't do it, when I do, we normally lose, it's not my cup of tea or dish or anything

I can shoot though, so it's all good, and am normally the "Field Commander", the guy with his mic button firmly pressed in barking orders and leading the way to get his Marines sent home in boxes ASAP

"First Alien that chuckles at me get's two in the face and one in the **obscenity**"
