Internet users in Hong Kong can now browse the internet at speeds that UK residents only dream about.
Hong Kong Broadband Network has launched a new ultra fast service. The symmetric 1Gbps service costs approximately £112 per month, but obliterates the kind of speeds we are used to in the UK. We are eagerly waiting for the rollout of an 8Mbps service and consider that to be fast.
While this kind of speed is unlikely to be available in the UK for some time, the possibilities for its use are immense. Large publishers could offer direct download services for their games, online gaming could be revolutionised and TV channels could be streamed at MPEG-2 DVD quality. It is hard to actually imagine speeds reaching 1Gbps in the UK, but we can dream.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

ding.
/me boots 56k.
*Shzar has disconnected.
The fastest broadly available German broadband is 256 K, BTW...
I... want... my... gig...
Amend the Constitution! Free 1gbps connections for all!
Maybe once stuff comes out that will actually allow you to make use of it then it'll be cool and stuff but for now you're limited to the game limitations anyways and for downloading you can't go faster than the upload speed of what you're grabbing from.
Hello bottleneck city :3
/me dies

You could host an awesome listenserver, or join a server hosted by someone with the same speed connection... with your rates set to insane levels.
If it spreads and the price drops a lot then gaming will rock... I think even MMOs might potentially become more interesting as a development!
Until it spreads though, those getting it will find their opportunities to truely enjoy it's benefits limited :p
imagine all the..... you could download.
1 Gbit = 1024 Mbits
1 Mbit = 1024 Kbits
128Kbps goes into 1Gbps 8192 times.
That means I could host 49152 TS players, roughly.
Or conversely, I could host a website with basically unlimited transfer. Let's see, if I restricted users to 200KBps (bytes now) in download rate, that means I could have
((1Gb / 8 (turn it into bytes)) * 1024 * 1024) / 200 = about 655 maxed out users.
This would totally sap my upload speed, but I could just barely handle it. Now, thinking every user would be going at 200K isn't really realistic, so the number of total users would fluctuate much higher. You'd prolly set something up that divides regular site surfers from downloaders so that your site's service never just turned off for someone when the bandwidth load got high.
Oh, I can think of a few applications of this puppy...
Don't blame the ISP's.... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
But yea, internet connections that REQUIRE gigabit ethernet to take full advantage....may be a little ahead of their time <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
But can u imagine having that installed in house with several computers. Now you can finally have shared internet access with no crappy downloads/uploads cos one is hogging all the bandwith.
However, the article is a bit misleading...
Another place shows a chart with numbers, the upstream is capped at 20Mbits, it seems... So my numbers aren't quite so high. 20Mbits is still quite a bit though.

anyway, the network is still not mature enough to have this.

But then again, that kind of speed would be torrent heaven.

Being their professionally done servers, 1GPS is pretty slow for them.
Most their servers operate at Internet 2.0 speeds- 9 to 11 GPS.
