Internet users in Hong Kong can now browse the internet at speeds that UK residents only dream about.

Hong Kong Broadband Network has launched a new ultra fast service. The symmetric 1Gbps service costs approximately £112 per month, but obliterates the kind of speeds we are used to in the UK. We are eagerly waiting for the rollout of an 8Mbps service and consider that to be fast.

While this kind of speed is unlikely to be available in the UK for some time, the possibilities for its use are immense. Large publishers could offer direct download services for their games, online gaming could be revolutionised and TV channels could be streamed at MPEG-2 DVD quality. It is hard to actually imagine speeds reaching 1Gbps in the UK, but we can dream.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

1Gbps? I've had that for months now. I thought everyone else did too.

Yeah, the UK is completely behind when it comes to interweb technologies. Up until recently the average package was only 512kbps or 1mbps.

while amazingly cool who's really got £112 a month to spare on that???
Maybe once stuff comes out that will actually allow you to make use of it then it'll be cool and stuff but for now you're limited to the game limitations anyways and for downloading you can't go faster than the upload speed of what you're grabbing from.

    Hello bottleneck city :3

You could host an awesome listenserver, or join a server hosted by someone with the same speed connection... with your rates set to insane levels.
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
like I said... it's limited by what's on the other end so sure, you can join similar speed connection servers for amazing games but it's only going to be good if everyone on the server, the server itself and you all have the super-mega connection.

If it spreads and the price drops a lot then gaming will rock... I think even MMOs might potentially become more interesting as a development!

Until it spreads though, those getting it will find their opportunities to truely enjoy it's benefits limited :p

Well, let's see... I hosted 6 players pretty comfortably on my 128Kbps upstream cable in The Specialists... so...

    1 Gbit = 1024 Mbits
    1 Mbit = 1024 Kbits

    128Kbps goes into 1Gbps 8192 times.

That means I could host 49152 TS players, roughly.

Or conversely, I could host a website with basically unlimited transfer. Let's see, if I restricted users to 200KBps (bytes now) in download rate, that means I could have

    ((1Gb / 8 (turn it into bytes)) * 1024 * 1024) / 200 = about 655 maxed out users.

This would totally sap my upload speed, but I could just barely handle it. Now, thinking every user would be going at 200K isn't really realistic, so the number of total users would fluctuate much higher. You'd prolly set something up that divides regular site surfers from downloaders so that your site's service never just turned off for someone when the bandwidth load got high.

Oh, I can think of a few applications of this puppy...

feel sorry for you britsh ppl, we just got FiOS installed in our neighborhood by Verizon. For 45 bucks you can get 15 Mb download and max of 1 Mb upload.

But yea, internet connections that REQUIRE gigabit ethernet to take full advantage....may be a little ahead of their time <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Uhh, unless the other side of the connection (meaning mostly American server) can deliver at 1 gbps also, I don't see why anyone will want to upgrade yet.

So what is it? Some sort of fiberoptics cable? It can't be DSL, I'm pretty sure of that.

Lets not be selfish. Sure 1Gbt will be useless to one person.

But can u imagine having that installed in house with several computers. Now you can finally have shared internet access with no crappy downloads/uploads cos one is hogging all the bandwith.

Doesn't anyone actually read my posts?! There's plenty of reasons for wanting this. You'd be a virtual server network unto yourself! For quite a bit less money than renting a single server per month at something like 100mbits.

However, the article is a bit misleading...

Another place shows a chart with numbers, the upstream is capped at 20Mbits, it seems... So my numbers aren't quite so high. 20Mbits is still quite a bit though.

Let me tell u teh fact. its not something far away. bb1000's (the name of the scheme) speed 1Gps limits only in hong kong. so if u surf nets oversea, u will only have like 20Mps. and i can tell u hong kong broadband's service is unstable. the local ping can run up to 2xx sometimes.

anyway, the network is still not mature enough to have this.

Would you really WANT to do that?

But then again, that kind of speed would be torrent heaven.

Being their professionally done servers, 1GPS is pretty slow for them.

Most their servers operate at Internet 2.0 speeds- 9 to 11 GPS.
