Would It Be Possible To...

...Live without eating?
I was thinking (Gasp),

If you were to take Vitamin suppliments (In swallowable pill form), for every vitamin, protien, fibre, etc out there.. and as long as you kept drinking water, would you need to eat, ever?

..Anybody willing to try this?

Uh, no? Energy comes from calories.

You could cut corners on "eating" by drinking your meals instead, but technically that'd be cheating.

You COULD get all your vitamins and minerals from pills sure, but it's recommended you eat the food they come from itself for other added benefits (antioxidants, for one)

Regular Coke has about 150 Calories. You'd need to drink about 10-20 of those, just to get enough energy to live normally. You can't get Calories through pills, unless you want to eat a thousand sugar pills a day.

Bingo, stick the pizza and kebab from yesterday in a blender with a bottle of beer and that bit of chocolate you found on the floor behind the couch, mix hold your nose and drink a meal fit for kings, that will wake you up in the morning

As they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, might aswell make it the best.

On a more serious note you could mix and drink all your meals, in effect not eating.

I was under the impression you needed the bulk, not just the vitamins.

My friend had surgery, he couldn't eat for a month. He was on the tube.

If you want engergy, take some speed. Of course, that'd kill you quicker.

No your organs needs to work with the food. It would work some weeks/months maybe a half a year but sooner or later your organs will collapse taking your life with them like an angry noob not getting to fly a spitfire in battlefield cause u got in 0.1 secs before him.

    Could you survive? Maybe..

But would you really want to?

I for one enjoy eating food. Most people do.

A while ago there was a Slashdot article on the US army developing food patches as a potential way of helping troops stay fed and in the field longer. Food patches as in like nicotine patches to help people quit smoking. I don't know what became of the idea, though.

Anyway, as mentioned already, what the body mainly needs to keep going is energy. If you're not getting sufficient kilojoules of energy intake you'll start burning through you fat reserves and eventually (I think) you'll just die. Getting enough of the various nutrients and vitamins keeps things working properly, but they aren't the actual fuel. For example, if you're well-fed but don't get enough vitamin C you run the risk of things like scurvy, and if all you eat are vitamin C tablets then you'll die of starvation instead of scurvy.

In this day and age, couldn't you just pop a few.. kilojoules tablets?

Okay, thats stupid.. but energy is sugar and whatnot, is it not?

Or do you need to actually have that 'Stuff' in your stomache to keep tickin'?

You'd be making a lot of gurgling noise, though.

As for sugar, that's a quick burst of energy. Your body requires far greater amounts of energy just to carry out normal daily functions. Sitting down burns like..around 1k calories alone, if I remember correctly. Just from internal functions.

    Yes, its called butter.

i think someone could do it, but i'll bet no insurance would want to cover them, they'd be more prone to like every kind of disease, and they would lead a miserable life.

Besides, humans are optimized for getting nutrients out of food, not supplements, so you'd need ALOT of them.

O and the organs do digest themselves in extreme cases of starvation, so like if you forgot to take your butter 'pill' every day, for a week, Drfuzzy would be quite correct.

Maybe a little off topic here but still on starvation I guess, wasn't there also an idea by the US Army that you can urinate on food to save water supplies on cooking food?
