System Shock 2

on xp
I know there has been a thread of this here before, but can’t seem to find it by searching.

As the title suggests, I cannot get SS2 to run on xp (sp2 if that matters). I have tried everything here short of
"Locate a safedisc unwrapper, and run it on the shock2.icd file to generate an unwrapped EXE."

as I have no idea what that means. The game installs, loads, and plays the opening movie fine. It does the % bar load to start the first level and freezes at 100% and I have to use task manager to shut it down.

Might also want to try here:

    http://www.timmymagic.com/sshock2/index.php

That's where I got my SS2 to work.

Truth is, the Dark Engine doesn't like hyperthreading. At all. Perhaps this could be your problem (I have the same issue, as does anybody else with a Pentium 4). But never fear, it's totally easy to fix:

    1. Double-click the SS2 icon.
    2. Once the .EXE starts, hit ctrl+alt+delete to bring up the task manager.
    3. Navigate to the 'Processes' pane, find the correct executable, and right click it.
    4. Choose 'Set Affinity...' from the menu
    5. In the window that comes up ('Processor Affinity'), there should be a good number of checkboxes (CPU 0, CPU 1 etc etc). Two should be checked if you have hyperthreading enabled.
    6. Simply uncheck one of the boxes (it doesn't matter which).
    7. You're ready to rock.

Now, if this is indeed your problem you're going to need to do it every time you start the executable.

PS: Now, if that wasn't your problem I just wasted ten minutes of my life.

I dont have a dual core, and Im pretty sure hyperthreading is only a feature on intell procesors, plus I cant see the metioned options anyway.

Try setting it to Win95 compatability mode. How I got mine to run.

Interestingly enough, I didnt work when I tried 95 or 98, but it did work when I set compatability to 2000/nt.

On another note, WOW this game certainly lives up to the hype, its awsome.
