i think you get my point there. THAT'S what i mean by pretentious.. it's like, "ooh, we're silent for half of this f*ing episode, and 60% of it is also still frames, and the rest is an attempted mind-f*k sequence that succeeds not in taking your mental virginity but in lulling you to merciful, bored slumber... isn't that sophisticated??"
You're looking at the wrong anime for thought provoking material.
Go watch Haibane Renmei or Lain. Lain's confusing though, if you aren't ready for it. So you might want to start with Haibane Renmei.
As for Bleach, Naruto and so on, yeah been watching that, but I'm too varied to only watch straight shounen fighting anime.
Anyone seen any School Rumble? That may be the funniest show I have ever seen in my life. Episode 9 or so I think, whichever one that guy Harima takes center stage in, I actually had to pause it, go outside for a walk, and come back, just to make sure I didn't die of oxygen deprivation due to laughter.

trigun was a great anime because it had decent depth and it was delivered well... MD Geist is a good anime because it promises only action and adventure and only delivers action and adventure...
when you get an anime like Wolf's Rain, it acts as if it has something to give, something to tell, with all its extended silences and still frames and contemplative camera angles...
but you don't get sh*.
i don't need marianas trench caliber depth, i need either anime that isn't deep or anime that's deep, not anime that acts as if it's SoOOooo deep but turns out to be about as deep as a wad of spit..

hehe, yes I hate EVA, but that is simply b/c I wana kill all the characters
but as Cold Night said.
If you don't want an action flic, don't watch an action flic (cuz that is what Hellsing is).
If you wana watch some good animes with interesting plot and character development and some stuff to think about: RahXephon Chobits (ok, not all that thought provoking, but still fun) GitS:SAC
I dono what you are trying to get at.
yes, there are alot of animes out there that you wont like/suck.
then again that is gona be true for any medium (as Anime is not a genre, it is simply a medium)
oh, and I still fail to see hellsing as pretentious.
All that stuff is just there for style. 1/2 of the point of killing massive #s of mooks is that you have to do it in style. Again, action flic. Check your brain at the door and you will enjoy it.
I realy didn't like Hellsing for the first few epps, then I decided to just look at it as an action flic and everytihng got better

Lain was a major disapointment. Excellent delivery, plenty of foreshadowing and building up which was then **** down the toilet. The ending was nothing but technobabble, and utter nonsense to anyone who knows how computers and the Internet really work. I had high hopes for this series, but as far as I'm concerned it didn't deliver.

I still haven't seen wolf rain but as than says I don't really know where you got the impression hellsing was going to be 'deep' from. It's pretty much your standard fare action anime. Course, they tend to have a little bit more 'mystery' (as in; "we're not telling you stuff, work it out on your own dammit") and character development than their western counterparts but they're still just action flicks
I'm sorry but I never really liked EVA much. As than says the characters are pretty annoying or flat and generally I wasn't all that hooked by the story either. Even my friend who's a big EVA fan was somewhat irked about the finale which was supposedly all about the director's childhood or something. Rah Xephon is miles and miles and miles better though similar :3
As for anime trying to be thought-provoking but just ending up boring it depends on which one you're talking about. Patlabour pretty much falls into that category. I have actually found myself enjoying it on the rare occassions but it's a flick that demands you be in the right mindset to watch it or it just ends up being, quite frankly, dull.
It's kinda funny really though zig because you sound like me when I'm talking about the matrix which I thought was utter pants yet it has fans going "omg so deep! it's soo deep!"
I agree on Zig on most anime being pretentious. Evangelion really is a perfect example. But Hellsing isn't. B-movie dialogue, over-done charaters, bad lines, and animation that had very little motion. I don't find Hellsing really tries to be anything more than an action series, and a good one at that. The small ammounts of motion onscreen is made up for by the action scenes, which I've rewatched a few times.
I don't watch anime for stories. I grew out of that when I was 13. 95% of anime "stories' are angsty, pretentious bull, or stupid cutesy romance crap. The few that deliver rule, though. Kind'er went off on a rant though. Hellsing rocks, but then again, I had no idea what it was when I first watched it, so it was a great action series with delightfully campy dialogue, characters, and stories. Amazing what going into something with no hype at all does, eh?
Comments
Half the fun of watching this stuff really is the "what the heck is going on?" factor that permeates most of the films ^^
