<div class="IPBDescription">WHO NEEDS A DOOMANIAC?</div> <a href='http://science.slashdot.org/science/05/04/10/189239.shtml?tid=146&tid=14' target='_blank'>Obligatory Link to Slashdot</a> - Pretty cool stuff. <Obligatory praising of slashdot.> Apparently
the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) was able to drill a hole to the Earth's Crust for the first time ever. It stands to reason that they have put considerable time into solving this problem if they have gotten this far. One wonders what their resources are. However I'm sure their findings have been pretty good since this is something that's not been done before.
<a href='http://www.livescience.com/technology/050407_earth_drill.html' target='_blank'>Obligatory Link to what Slashdot already links to.</a> - <Opinions> The original article is very thought provocative blah blah blah blah blah. <Opinions.> Several questions are posed by this article. What sort of machinery is used to blah blah blah blah.
<Obligatory "Crazy" statement and/or idea.> (I.E. Haha, I can see it now, Geothermal Powerplants a.l.a. Total Annihilation. Placed right next to the mantle so as to have the highest efficiency.)
<Obligatory Question to Audience.> (I.E. What do YOU think is at the core of the Earth?)

Throw rocks into them. Them be good times.
There may be undiscovered elements and or Chemical processes taking place down there. We don't know everything about Earth just yet buddy. We just assume we do. It's like the way people just sort of assume we know all the living species on the planet. No one says it outright, but no one really assumes there are anymore truely great discoveries to be had. I chalk it up to human arrogance really. Am I just being too cynical? I dunno, but I don't agree with the way we assume we know everything.
What is it you kids say these days?
Oh yes...
QFT!?

I was being sly!
After all, I am Monse's apprentice!
I can't wait till I'm really old, so I can be a grouchy bastard. Angry yet funny all the time. Like that one guy from the Friar's club (before Comedy Central bastardized it)

On topic: Cool, now we can go fishing for Lavafish!
Probably could have done just that and had the same effect. Because it'd still divert our attention from anything to do with the core of the earth.
As for me, I don't sweep my hand across the keyboard to produce gibberish, I read Triple A's posts, black out, then allow my head to spasm on the keyboard. It's a different sort of process really.

Agreed.

Speaking of Lavafish, the first thing I thought of when I read this news post was that 3d video by Blur animation studios, "Rockfish". Anyone remember it?

My apologies.
back on topic:
I hope that this sort of technology develops, allowing us to drill deeper for oil. Then maybe there will be a sudden new supply and prices will drop, and also a country's influence and reputation will be based more on their behavior & policies than on what dinosaurs died under their land.
Toot toot!
Wouldn't we want to end oil dependence altogether? If the center's all molten rockey can't it provide a lot of energy somehow? I mean, the rocks are <i>molten</i> for Christ's sake. Molten. That's like, colder than ice or something.
Edit: Damn, Cold-Nite, your post was so shortly after mine, the obligatory exclamation gives me a perfect excuse to fix my tags...
I didn't expect to run lava-fueled cars tomorrow, but the deprecation of oil is what I'm looking forward to. That and VR porn.

On topic;
I hadn't thought of drilling for oil. Dumb of me to glaze over something like that. I'm sure that would change the geopolitical powerscale. But that sort of thing is always far away. And I'm sure OPEC wouldn't sit idly by and watch. They might try to work on the technology themselves if it was shown to have any possibilities of increasing their profits. They might pull a DeBeers and halt any progress in that direction.
@Crono, of course we'd want to halt oil dependency. It's an archaic and fruitless means of energy. But thinking in the somewhat short-term, that's simpler than trying to equivocate geothermal energy with something as mobile as a car. Unless you plan to run your car on lava or something.
**EDIT**
I think all men on the internet look forward to VR porn. That however, is another thread for another day, probably to be started by Mantrid.
Why an express route to china of course!

Hey, I'm still brilliant!
Of course, but that sort of thing is a ways off. Drilling a bit deeper and finding a new supply of oil would be more of a quick fix to get us out of insane gas prices at least until the new supply runs out.
