sorry for being so vague. i need something that is preferably about (although not limited to) current events and it needs to be arguable in some sense. for example, social security issues, foreign policy, etc. however, it doesnt have to be political
im not disregarding your suggestions, but ive got one more guideline. a topic thats pretty low key amongst the knowledge of the general public would be nice. i have geniuses in my class and im pretty confident that theyll tackle the popular issues
Seeing as I just finished doing a play on it, the poetry of Allen Ginsberg, and the obscenity court case to do with 'Howl'. It was INCREDIBLY interesting. Really philosophical stuff. Ultimately the conclusion we reached was that there really are no boundaries in life, a kid saying a dirty word is no more vulgar than an adult, and that in the end nothing really matters, but then again it does matter because were people.

You can draw from the Wired article someone posted. You'd blow the whole class away, because no one ever thinks about those things.
didn't read the whole thread and not sure if this was brought up, but what about affirmative action.
Most people don't know about affirmative action until they get screwed over.
Or how about there's just as much racism/segregation/inequality today as there was 50 years ago, it's just not blatant. Ex. united negro college fund, organizations that clearly show segregated issues.
Try having a white male college fund and the NAACP will be all over you.

edit: im not racist
as for what topic im gonna use, im still clueless.
well for me to get a good grade, the paper has to very idealistic. the point of the class is creating an argument and following through with it. maybe calling it a "research paper" doesnt fit. oh well.
ethics of human cloning. It's what I'm doing for a biotech class paper. Masses of information and John Doe hasn't got the foggiest. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
It's a very broad topic though... Don't know if you're looking for anything specific.

EDIT: I still think my idea of the commodification of white collar jobs (e.g. outsourcing computer programming to India) is a good one.
Dreamcast being the greatest console of the last generation is easily arguable, especially if you like Dreamcast. If you're some kinda weirdo, replace Dreamcast with console of choice and win.
Really, think of any opinionated thing you are into, and unless personal stuff is off limits, use that.

Its so obvious people dont realise it. Due to lack of general maintenance and outright stupidity private companies, buessnesses, schools, and your everyday idiot have to spend millions of dollars each year for safeguards, not to mention the cost of lost info, lost time and productivity do to system problems etc.
I think I read somewhere that large companies usualy end up spending about $1,200 per employee to safeguard against computer viruses alone and several billion dollars are lost each year to data loss.

why can quality chinese food be cheap yet italian, indian, and japanese food tend to be expensive ?
then again I'm chinese and have experience with real chinatowns. maybe if i were italian, indian, or japanese i'd know where to get the good stuff for cheapers
now i know there is the odd italian place that is good eatins and cheap but they are not as common as chinese places (<i>where I am from</i>. Cuz I also know there are a lot of crap fake chinese food places across the nation, although most of the non chinese wouldn't know it, haha)
anyways i've wondered about this and maybe you can too. also the frenchies, just where are their restaurants? their food is supposed to be good. maybe they price way out of my league - why would that be ?
i had more ideas bbl hopefully in time haha. i think you'll be able to change your topic if you really want to tho
