I have heard of Puerto Rico, I don't think I've played it. (Every Friday, a group of people at my school meet up and play lots of games, meaning that I have only played some of the games once.)
My favorite one is probably The Settlers of Catan. I also like Pirateer.
Why limit it to board games? My favorite card game is Fluxx.
Fluxx is a reaaally weird game ^^; I enjoy a good game of munchkin from time to time
Boardgame-wise I've gots me spacehulk (both editions), space crusade, advanced space crusade, heroquest, warhammer quest, robo rally, atmosfear (poop) and a ton of others probably stuffed in the attic
I was considering getting the doom 3 one for a giggle because it looks a lot like a cross between space crusade and space hulk ^^
Settlers of Catan is honestly my favorite game of all time.
Axis and Allies is great too.
Another really fun one is this older game my friend's folks used to have. I can't remember what it was called, but you get to play a politicain who lies cheats and steals thier way from some local governement post to president. The fun part was that you had to read each other the card you drew to get money and move around the board, and if you could either read what the card actualy said, or make something else. So dpending on how convincingly you could make up something you could extort huge sums of cash from your opponets, or end up with a bankrupt campaign if you ot caught. The only downside was that after a while you learned the real cards, which destroyed the game, but until that point it was a great game.
and that medieval game where you have to build your jkingdom and place some men which then give you points, its called something french or something like carcason?
Card games....play Spoons, that rocks. Its extremely random but fun, and you need a lot of spoons to play.
And how will I link a strange card game to a topic about boardgames, you ask? Well, here goes nothing. First time I played Spoons it was because I was bored. Board. Boardgames. Sorted.
spoons is the most impossibly violent card game you can play... in our time we've lost a seat, several spoons, a couple of card decks and probably a couple of layers of skin to the game

Scrabble. Zygote on a triple word score FTW.
Risk is also fun, as is Operation and Hungry Hippos. My partner collects board games, so we have quite the selection. At my parents house I probably still have Space Hulk and all the WH40K board games too.

As for games, I'm a big fan of good ol' cribbage. Nothing like double skunking your girlfriend and laughing while she chucks the deck of cards across the room. I still can't find the 8 of clubs.
I play chess once in a while, and I'm trying to get some of my friends to try out shogi (the japanese variant). Other than that I mostly play quizes and stuff like that. I'm also trying my best to become a good d20 Modern gamemaster if that counts
only advice you need to be a good games master in any system is to describe stuff properly I don't know how many GMs I've suffered who say things like "you're in a cave" and that irks me. They usually get barraged with irritable questions like "is it dark? is it wet? how big is it? what the heck's in it? what colour is it? how many exits are we talking?"
When being GM and it comes to your shot at describing the world imagine you're writing a book; you are the eyes, ears and noses of the players after all. Instead of
"you're in a cave"
it'd be more like...
"you enter into the forboding caverns of moth'ragal; the darkness closing around you as you take step after step into it's monstrous depths. The faint, distant echoes of water droplets perforate the stale, clammy air and sharp stalactites hang from above like sharp fangs in the mouth of a great beast. The way ahead leads in only two directions, both as ominous and black as each other. From one the creeping sound of air whispers while the other greets you with solemn silence."
Oh and act your characters out a bit too. Give them lil 'quirks' you can do while you're playing their part like an eye twitch, scratching their nose, coughing, or even just their posture; it all adds to the immersion and image. Your chars don't all have to be freakish mutants with odd problems but people remember certain things about characters and if you can just slightly exaggerate it so that you can bring it forward yourself while acting you help make them more memorable
Yeah i am playing "real" boardgames. Although PR is deemed by many as the best boardgame ever, i really prefer Age of Steam,Ys , Tigris&Euphrat or Amun-Re over it. If i am rested, i do enjoy some Gpiff project games even though they are really taxing mentally.
Lofung do you know about BreetSpielWelt? It is a great place to play online lots of boardgames like PR. See you there!

Settlers is the best, Puerto Rico is also loads of fun, and I am a HUGE Risk fan, though dice are not my friend which normally impedees my playing.

Try Cosmic Encounter, it's a unique game that does not rely on luck like Risk or Monopoly. The skill portion depends on how you negotiate with other players and how you use your battle cards in different battles. There are 20 aliens and each has a different power.
Risk takes too long, so you are better off with Risk 2210 AD. I really want to play Settlers, but I can't find one anywhere. I also heard Ticket to Ride, Acquire, and Diplomacy are GOLD games.
Too bad people where I live don't play board games.

The card game Grass is pretty cool. Anyone else played it?
Of course, there is always Risk.

[EDIT:] typo
Card game of Catan and Magic: The Gathering
