    I mean, consider it. Nil_IQ pretty much just described a base assault and how to capture it, but he left out the part where you fight your way through the base through 50-100-ish troops to get there in the first place. The bases are mainly corridoors until you get into the basement (which is like a storage area, full of crates etc). Now imagine charging down a corridoor towards 6 people who have an MCG (Mini-Chain-Gun, 100 bullets per clip, very fast firing and quite painful) or a Lasher (which shoots large balls of energy which do a load of damage on contact, as well as "lashing" out towards other troops near you). That's pretty painful right there. Then imagine that all you have is a shotgun that loses all it's usefulness at above a range of, say, 6 feet. 'Nuff said.

    Then again I'm just a bit bitter at an incredibly embarassing assault the NC just utterly messed up. Ok, now imagine the situation sticky just described, except you're defending, and 6 ScatterMAXes are bearing down the coridoor towards you, and behind them, several hundred NC all armed with jackhammers. That is why the NC do not need buffing. Except for the sparrow MAX.

    Funny story, happened just now.

    The NC hacked one of our bases, one with an LLU. It doesn't look like they can hold the hack, but I decide to go after the LLU anyway. I arrive to find several wrecked NC vehicles, and the hack is resecured, but then I see a dot on my radar. I swing around, SQUISHIE! You think the NC have the hardest time ASSAULTING??? OMGWTHBBQ? The empire with a shotgun as their heavy assault weapon, as well as a MAX unit which can kill in two shots (and has a shield), and you think they have the HARDEST time assaulting? Go play TR for a week, then come back and try to argue that your empire has it tough in assault.

    You have the only man-portable weapon capable of killing in one shot. I'd consider that an "assault" weapon, wouldn't you?

    And i'll repeat, having the most powerful single shot weapon in the game is useless if you have to run down a long corridoor against a group of people with fairly powerful weapons themselves, just to get in range. By the time you get there, IF YOU GET THERE, you'll have enough time to get off one shot, maybe, which'll probably miss anyway. It's like a skulk having to run at 5 marines without being able to leap or run on the walls, and the corridoor is only wide enough to fit two skulks side by side.

    Try using a jackhammer against an MCG at anything other than close range, and you <b>will</b> lose.

    That's kind of the idea of a shotgun. Use explosives if they're at the end of a corridor, the other empire weapons aren't too good in that situation either(those guys at the end of the corridor will just jump up on a box and you can't shoot them).

    Align has it. The thumper + jackhammer combo is by far the best in the game. If they hide around corners or down coridoors, use the thumper. If they try to rush you, whip out the jackhammer. Besides all of this, it has a much better range than everyone thinks, has insta-hit projectiles (most projectiles in planetside are actual projectiles rather than hitscan), and kills in THREE FREAKING SHOTS.

    You're not going to convince anyone that the jackhammer is underpowered dude.
  • X_StickmanX_Stickman Not good enough for a custom title. Join Date: 2003-04-15 Member: 15533Members, Constellation
    I'm not saying the jackhammer is underpowered, i'm just saying in a corridoor like situation, it loses. And yeah it does do damage at mid-range (i get random kills by getting some poor guy with it after he's been shot by a sniper or something), but compared to, say, the MCG, it will lose.

    The thumper combo.... well, the same can be said for the other empires. You're at one end of the corridoor hiding around a corridoor, they thumper you, you have to run out, then they shoot you with their HA weapons before yours is in range.

    But yeah, not saying the JH is underpowered. Up close (like you've just hop dropped on a tower) it's unmatched, but in a corridoor/base fight, the range of the other empire's HA weapons just give them an advantage over the JH.

    Just like to say, regardless on whether the NC have a good weapon or not, their intelligence factor as a whole is severely Nerfed. Example (just quit the game out of sheer embarrasment. On a side note, there was a secondary assault on Amerish where TWO vs held off 15 NC indefinately, until the NC got bored and left):

    <img src='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/X_Stickman/Stuff/hatehatehatehatethenc.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    I forgot to mention that all of the bases the VS took were previously held by the NC, which makes it a whole lot worse.

    It's like when NS1.00 came out, the underdogs(back then the aliens) were at such bad odds that the average skill level skyrocketed, because you were FORCED to be good, or you would die most horribly. And often.
    Which is of course why aliens were overpowered in the following versions. They were simply 3 times better than the marines.

    That was quite an epic TR last stand at Itan, I was there myself. Not because I thought we'd achieve anything by being there, but because I needed kills for my next merit. I got scavenger Bronze merit, plus 22 kills to 8 deaths, so i'm quite proud of my performance there. Situations like that are where the TR MAX units can actually USE their special abilitys; only problem is once it gets to that stage you're already screwed.

    To continue the jackhammer debate, yeah I know stickman, but you can always carry a gauss or a thumper around, that's why rexo has 2 slots. What if you're TR and you want a weapon which is effective up-close? Sorry! No shirtgun for you!

    I'm not gonna carry on with this debate because it's obvious we both have our own opinions that aren't going to be changed. <span style='font-size:2pt;line-height:100%'>Jackhammer sucks in assaults</span>

    What is your in game name anyway, because if you like Jackhammers and you're going for the scavenger thing (i am too really, got bronze a while ago, working on silver whenever I can) i'm happy enough to trade a locker full of jackhammers for a locker full of MCGs. Just need to meet at a tower somewhere. Alone. Tell no one.

    Just got the magazine and the double sided disk made my day. Very posh.

    Edit: I managed to get it working, but this intro video is horrible <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Does anyone know how to skip it? It goes on for about 3 minutes and then starts again.

You'll need to get a CD-Key <a href='http://cmt.ubisoft.fr/planetside_pcgamer/' target='_blank'>HERE</a> and then download the game client <a href='http://www.marcopolo.me.uk/psinstall.exe' target='_blank'>HERE</a>. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    I did the thing that is supposed to email me a cd-key, a couple times even, and it's been 20 minutes and no email.

    edit: anyone know of any other place to get the free trial?

    The intro is unskippable, but it should only play once, and it SHOULDN'T loop like you say it does.

    And yeah, the latest patch kind of screwed things up. Server crashings every half hour or so..... not good.

    Ah, i understand now. After the first part of the video, it played that red wavey bit again and i assumed that it was playing the video again, so i alt f4ed to look for a fix on the planetside forums. The video is actually just <i>really</i> long, so nevermind <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
