Argh Stupid Bloody Fog Horns!

What's the point in them these days?
I live in Portsmouth and it's really foggy and there's a ton of ships out off the coast all blasting their stupid flipping fog horns and keeping me awake
What's the point in them things anyway isn't sound distorted by fog so you can't tell what direction it came from? Plus don't all big ships have radar on them these days that isn't affected by fog?

And just because it's foggy doesn't mean enough water is in the air to accelerate the speed of sound all that much so you can still discern direction.
The sole purpose is to keep people alive. You fail at funnies.
But the high-pitched ones suck.
captain bob: "you should see the size of my fog horn, it's huuuuge!"
captain mike: "I've only got a small high pitched one, but it's enough to keep the ladies up all night"

I thought it was fairly amusing actually.

Point is they were needed once upon a time but not anymore, modern technology and common sense keeps people alive these days.
And to the bloke that said you can still tell the direction from which a fog horn comes from in thick fog, sorry but that's rubbish go ask anyone that has sailed in thick fog. All they accomplish is letting you know that something is out in the fog and maybe how close it might be by how loud it is.

Well obviously these ships aren't 'upgraded'. Why else would they sound the horns. Its purpose is still keep people alive.

Oh this is just typical.
But yeah, despite my best attempts to resist, my father has managed to rub off some of his love for steam engines on me. And that includes steam-driven horns of all kinds. There's a certain "fill" in the sound that you just can't get with pressurized air.

ROFL all large ships carry radar I think they just sound their fog horns because it's required by law even though it's pointless and not needed.
Like there was some kind of invasion or ingrediant heh.
That's why we have radar and GPS. With technology, there should not be a need for foghorns. Unless for the sole purpose of blowing them and annoying people. They might just do it because they can. For example, when I was down in the Carribbean last week, I bought a pirate skull from St. Maarten. Why? Because I can.
Not so fast... :P
After all, there are hundreds of people hit by trains every year, which is rather silly since its not like it can move left or right to hit you...

You know, that fancy gear costs money.
Yay for sleep deprivation induced violent fantasies that I will attribute to playing too many video games!

Yer and it's kinda mandatory to have it as far as I know.
And yes, the horns arnt for the supertankers, there for the amateur and commercial fisherman.

Obviously a rowing boat isn't gonna have radar facilites on it ffs but large comercial ships and even fishing trawlers will be equiped with it by law. My earlier point still stands though about you not being able to accuratly tell what direction a fog horn is coming from in dense fog because sound is distorted.
mah new siggy!
