<div class="IPBDescription">Just a few questions, general stuff like</div> Ok just recently i've had to switch back to my NetGear DM602 after my PCI adsl modem card died suddenly last night ( i will be holding the funerul in my back garden, those who want to join me please pm ). I bought my netgear ages ago thought it would own the PCI but it didnt,i found it sucked real hard. Any time i wanted to connect to servers through steam etc my router would die and i would have to keep restarting it etc.

But i wasnt recently exposed to portforwarding.com great site told me how to port forward etc.

But i have recently come arcoss the DMZ heres what the menu says in my options for my router...
<!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1--> DMZ Help

The DMZ page allows you to set your PC as a DMZ server, which is available to anyone on the Internet for services that you haven't defined. There are security issues with doing this, so only do this if you're willing to risk open access. If you do not assign a Default DMZ Server, the modem discards any undefined service request.

To set your PC as a DMZ server, check the Enable box.

Click Apply when you finish changing the settings.

Click Cancel to return to the original settings.

Note: If you need to delete the IP address of the DMZ server, you must enter 0.0.0.0 as the address, and then click the Apply button. <!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->

When i first came to this page i found the little box was CHECKED and i think my router had everything open, im not sure.

AND yes i have unchecked the box...

Can someone explain to me what i should do, im having trouble getting my head round this.

    If only you'd had a D-Link, I might've had useful input.

    **EDIT**
    You don't want to use a DMZ. Believe me, you might as well not have a router if you use a DMZ. Instead just open the ports you need. Bittorrent ports, pc game ports, various application ports, etc.

    DMZ forwards all ports to you.

    Meaning other people on the network can't host anything, as all initial connection attempts go to your pc instead. They *CAN* still make outgoing attempts (i.e. they can connect to whatever) and once a communication is established they can send and recieve data no problem.

    An example is, any PC would be able to join hl2 internet games, however only your pc would be able to be a server that other people from the internet can connect to.
