<div class="IPBDescription">Yet Another Upgrade Thread</div> I have a job. As such (shh, no mistakes here <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), I intend on upgrading my computer, at least I'm looking for a new motherboard/case (I have a micro ATX atm, too small for most motherboards) and a Gigabyte GeForce 6600 ($140.00 pci express)
Normally, I'm an ATI guy, but that is, until I made the move to Linux (I hear Talesin coming to correct me now) and I want to use a Nvidia card, because they support Linux better. I currently have a Radeon 9000 Pro, I have it working nicely with the 8.10.19 drivers, but if I'm upgrading, I'd like to try the nvidia.
Thing is, I don't want a 64 bit CPU. I've heard bad things with Athlon 64's and certain games. If at all posible, I want a motherboard that supports Athlon XP 3200+/3400+ with pci express so I can use that card.
I want to keep the upgrade under $400, so $260 for the motherboard/cpu Don't worry about the case, if I need to go a litle over the $400 for a case, I'll do it.
I'm going to use my existing RAM, HD, DVD and CD-RW
I currently have an Athlon XP 2000+ and the Radeon 9000 mentioned above.

Hehe.
Good luck finding a non-Ath64 and non P4 mobo that does PCIe. I'm pretty sure they don't exist.
And what 'bad things'? My Ath64 runs quite strong, pushing out a solid 85fps in HL2 (with a R9800 AIW at 1600x1200x32, vsync on). Perhaps you should list the rumors, so they can be washed away with truth.
Hehe. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Good catch.
As I also said, I am using the new ATI drivers, and am happy with them, but from everything I've heard nvidia supports linux better, and has for a while.
I may as well go with the athlon64 and another ATI, if I can find somthing comparable for a similar price. What would you recomend Talesin? You appear to have experiance in the field.
I could get an X700 Pro (256Mb) for $180 or a 9800 Pro (128Mb) for ~$160
newegg and pricewatch both give me the same general prices.
That'll put me in over my budget though...
So I'd need a motherboard and a CPU too...
As well as a case to put it in...
If I went with the 9800, I wouldn't have to worry about PCIe...

Almost $380, and with shipping, it'd be over that. Then there's a case...
<a href='http://xoxide.com/xwu.html' target='_blank'>Why not?</a>
Bringing the grand total to about$430-$440 not too bad.
I would like to hear your reasons again as to why ATI is better than nvidia. I've seen it in Windows, but I'm not sure about Linux.
As for ATI vs nVidia, I would get a 9800 Pro over a 6600, if you aren't counting PCIe. I would get a 6600GT over the 9800 Pro, however. I've heard that ATI has been steadily improving their Linux support for some time now, so they should have Linux support at least as good as nVidia, in a few months. I wouldn't really care which brand you go with, I'd just get whatever has a better price in the port that you want.
I'd also recommend the X700 or X800XL and PCIe route. PCIe is superfluous at the moment, and will only really prove useful when we get to 512MB video cards... until then, AGP is perfectly fine. Hell, we still haven't exhausted the bandwidth of AGP8x yet. But you WANT to keep your options open... have the new standard available.
The key is, allowing yourself to UPGRADE. Rather than being dead-ended with an old standard when the new stuff *is* available, just pop in a new card, chip, or whatnot. Think ahead. You don't want the money you put in to go in the goodwill box THAT fast.
And ATi's Linux drivers have been superior to nVidia's for almost a year now. The only thing they lacked was a 64-bit build... which was released three months ago. At this point the only thing worse about the ATi Linux drivers is the long-standing rumors that they're worse, perpetuated by people who parrot, instead of actually testing for themselves.
On most points, the ATi Linux drivers give a better performance baseline (compared to the windows drivers) than nVidia's (compared to the windows drivers). This means that ATi's Linux-side drivers perform almost as well as their Windows drivers, as opposed to nVidia.. which perform markedly worse than their Windows counterparts. It was excused in the past as 'bad porting' of the software in question (usually Q3), but at this point there's no excuse. nVidia has been shown to be slacking.
I know what he says about getting Nvidia's linux drivers on linux is true, it is a beast, and then if you DO get it working its sluggish as hell.
OMG.. that is fricking tight! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I can't confirm that though <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?DEPA=0&description=14-102-430&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=Video+Cards' target='_blank'>SAPPHIRE ATI Radeon X700 PRO Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 128-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, PCI-Express, Model</a> $179
+$35 for one of the cases offered with the motherboard.
$450+shipping... Hmm...
Then there's stuff like thermal paste, maybe extra fans that I could pick up from local places.
I suppose I could go for that then?
From newegg the total is $453.45 with shipping and handeling. Now I know what to save for <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
There about 46 hours of work...
This job is part time, so I get maybe10 hours a week now, already have 7 in, so I'll have this in 3-4 weeks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> that is if the prices don't change <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
