    Newbie commander tips:

    1. Waypoints.
    To give waypoints, just select a marine with the cursor, or drag a box around him, and right click on something.

    2.Hotkeys.
    Ctrl-(1 through 5) to assign a marine or a group of marines to a group. Press the group number (1 through 5) to select all the marines in that group.

    Hold Ctrl while clicking on marines to select multiple marines. The select all marines at the top of the screen will let you select all of them.

    Make sure you have your important buildings (the obs, primarily) hotkeyed, because they will turn red the second they get attacked, which you can see at the top of your display.

    Do you see how the buttons are arranged in a 4x3 grid? Here are the hotkeys:
    <!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->
    ________
    |Q|W|E|R|
    |A|S|D|F|
    |Z|X|C|V|
    <!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->
    It looks just like your keyboard keys.

    3.Quick Medspam.
    Hold S (the medpack key) and tap your left mouse button everytime you want to drop one.

    4.Requests.
    Click on the request to move your view to the person who requested something.

    5.Build order and a basic strategy.
    When you jump in the chair, jump in at an angle so that you are facing the rest of your base (when you jump out, you will be facing the same angle that you faced when you jumped in) so that you can kill any lone skulks in your base. You generally want to start out with an Armory and an Infantry Portal, the second you hop in the chair. If you want, you can drop a pack of mines, which should be placed around the IP. Then drop the nearest RTs and have your marines move out. You'll want to drop an arms lab pretty early and an observatory somewhat early. For the armslab, a safe upgrade order is A1, W1, W2, A2. If you have extra res, you can get W3, then A3. Against MCs, you will want to drop an Observatory early and research motion tracking to counter silence. Against SCs, you'll want to drop an obs early and use scanner sweep very often. You may want to drop 2 obs (drop the 2nd in another location if you can, so that it will uncloack any enemies in that location). You don't want to drop turrets in your base, because you and your marines will be able to protect against lower lifeforms pretty easily, and higher lifeforms aren't deterred by turrets. Depending on how the game is going, you may have enough res to put turrets down in a hive that you secured. You should get PGs by the time you have an area that you want to drop one in. You will want to have an Advanced Armory by the time they get their 2nd hive up. Drop a few shotguns by the time they get their first fade. Later in the game, you'll want to have HAs (drop a welder every time you drop an HA, they're a waste without welders) or JPs and heavy weapons. When you drop lots of weapons, drop a mix. You'll need at least sieges or shotguns to take out a hive, although if you're broke, concentrated LMG and HG fire will work, too. GLs are good against Skulks and Buildings, but are useless against Fades and Onos. SGs are good against all lifeforms and buildings, but are weak at long range. HMGs are great against all lifeforms, but weak against buildings. If you have all of one weapon, then you don't have enough versatility. Hand grenades aren't worth it, most of the time, because your team won't remember to use them, or won't know how to use them effectively, unless your team is experienced, or you're in a big game. Electrification is worthless against anything but skulks, lerks, and 1hive gorges.

    Note that these are very general, basic strategies, that won't work in every game and aren't especially sophisticated. If you execute a strategy, know why you're executing that strategy.

    6.Placement.
    Place your IPs and PGs away from your other buildings and walls, so that when the aliens attack someone coming out of them, that person will be knocked back, making it more difficult for the alien to follow up with another attack. Place your other buildings against walls, so the aliens can't hide behind them, and so that you have a clear shot against any aliens attacking your buildings.

    <b>7.Manual. (http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/comm_manual/basic/index.htm)
    Above all, make sure you know the manual almost by heart. If you don't know the game, you won't command well.</b>

    8.Forums.
    Read the marine strategy forum for tips. Read the general competitive and demo forums to find commander demos.

    You'll lose the first few games you command, unless your team is godly and the aliens suck. Expect that.

    ^Nice post ^

    To be able to experiment on your own:

    Start a server (Create New Game)

    press ~ (for the console)
    press e (or else the console will dissapear)
    type sv_cheats 1
    Now the game will start regardless of the # of players
    type bigdig to build instantly
    type givepoints for res

    BUILD!

    something you should know about commanding, if you are used to commanding in RTS games like StarCraft and C:FW, you might get a little overwhelmed, keep in mind those solders below you arent going to mindless follow orders 24/7 they got minds of their own (sometimes, i kina wish the HA's would follow orders like Corvettes...)
