take a read...
WE should all know Tolkein Served the in the First world War and Wrote LOTR During WW2

Here Are some obvius and less obvius things:

Battlements vs Rohirrim:
When in world war 1 he had Experiances with a Cavalry batallion. And That was one of the LAst times Horses Were used in warfare, this inspired The Rohirrim.

Hitler vs Sauron:
the Title baisically Explains it all, but what do you Think about it? they Were both Corrupt officials Who wanted to Take The World over.
This also Goes Alongside with
Sarumon Vs Musilini
there Are many instances where Tolkien Quotes musilini insome of his speaches
"A new power is Rising.....Its Victory is at hand"

Dead MArshes Vs Trench Warefare:

One of the more obvius ones was that During WW1, Trench warfare was being used, Water would build up in the Trenches and people would die and Remain Sitting In the water, Much like the Dead marshes with Dead bodies of Soldiers:

Symbolism:

In Lord Of the Rings when the final Charge at the black gate (led by aragorn) it seemed they were all dead. Until the eagles Came And helped Fight the battle.
In world War 2, America Held out until the End of the War until we joined and helped win the war,
Is it a coincidence or Hidden Meeaning that one Symbol Of America is an EAGLE?

    Uh...

Yes, you can draw similarities. That's what English Lit is all about. And any author is always going to draw on their own experiences in what they write. I doubt there's any deeper significance, however.

Any ideas on what the One Ring could be?
I'd guess it is what it is in the movie; the embodiment of power, and the corruption caused by that power.

The part which most interests me is when the hobbits come back to the Shire only to find that it has become a facist state. ;P

Just because Tolkein denies it doesn't mean WW2 wasn't an influence.

It's a symbol of virility. What makes me think that? MAGIC! I mean, that is what we're going for as far as theories, right?

The One Ring in this case could symbolize global domination by a certain power.
In the case of the LOTR outcome,it would be that America would be able to initiate global trade globally, instead of Hitler turning the world into a Nazi regime.
    Funny how that stands today.....
And it's not only LOTR that inspired WW2 images, showing it is an inspiration. Just look at the Lion King imagery.
But I doubt LOTR was meant to be a medieval WW2.

I would have thought it was more symbolic of humanity as a whole rather than any one single event in our past.

The point was that you can draw paralels to ANYTHING.

yah, one ring could be nukes, oil, $$, globalization, what ever you want.

One of the draws of LotR is that it isn't actualy bassed on ANYTHING save basic human principles.

Thus why it STAYS so engrossing to all.

Also, remember, MUCH of the base of LotR was writen WELL before WWII (infact it was written DURRING WWI)

As was stated, Tolkien HATED nitpicking down books to what they "Could be about", he always flat out stated that LotR was not bassed on anything (and thus why it rocks so much)

Independently from everything else, there are threads in the Discussion forums about this. Use them.

Oh and people, using grammar does not, in fact, hurt.

(Correct grammar gracefully provided by Grendel, may he march on forever )
