Really Weird Sound Problems

Help Me Forums-Won Kenobi
I've got a generic soundcard and a 5.1 speaker system. A couple of days ago when I restarted or something, I got a magical funky sound problem that defies all logic: in World of Warcraft, none of the NPCs make any sounds and none of the battles make any sound. Bug in the game, right? Yeah, I thought so too. So I fired up KOTOR 2 and lo and behold none of the lightsabers or blasters make any noises. No footsteps either. But everything else works. What in the world is going on? Can anyone help me fix this? If you can, me love you long time etc.

Sounds as if the card got problems with a certain kind of soundfile type.
    Reinstall drivers?

I'd go with this but... aren't they all wavs? But what do I know.

Some of the newer games use OGGs for certain sound effects, so maybe not.

I noticed such differences in other games as well, when for example the backgrund music was fine while all sounds created by the player/NPCs were blurred, or vice versa.

Have you tried updating/reinstalling your drivers? That's the only thing that really comes to mind.

Ogg Vorbis? They use open source software requiring special codecs? I never woulda expected that.

Yeah. An example is Star Wars Republic Commando. All of the music is in OGG format.

That's seriously awesome. I'm glad to hear it, since it is a good format.

Why not? Unlike MP3, it is completely license fee free.
