Any Good Video Encoding/converting Software?

...had some once.
Google seems to be a bit off for me at the moment; I'm looking for a freeware product that would let me convert files between types (like .avi to .mpg or the opposite).

[hopefully something that lets you splice two movies together, or a group of .bmps/.jpgs...but that's not as necessary]

I'm also looking for freeware that lets me capture video, sound and movement from my desktop (sort of found one, but doesn't keep movies or allow for editing).

I found a good one once, I just can't remember what it's called...and maybe there's a better one  .

Search words I've tried but that didn't really seem to get me anything:

video converter editor encoder capture freeware .avi .mpg shareware

Plenty of .wav<->.mp3 converters, apparently...

    Windows Media Player is FAIR

    Can Rip + burn music and DVD's...

    Also, WinAmp plays just about every damn music file type I can think of

    Yeah it does all the basics of conversion and encoding. Not much in the way of editing though, but you'd need a higher end program for that anyway.

    Yes, VirtualDub does seem to do the trick, thanks for pointing it out. I think it's actually the one I was using before.

    Maybe a higher end program is needed for this, but does anyone know of something that can capture your desktop along with any sounds or videos or fullscreen applications you might be playing?

    check http://www.videohelp.com/ they have a tutorial on converting every movie type into every other movie type. and thats a lot of tutorials. all include links to the software required. Ive made several SVCD's from AVI's thanks to their help

    (an svcd is a thing you burn to a CD-R and can be played back in most standard dvd players!)

    As silly as it sounds, Windows Movie Maker, which comes with XP, is my favorite video editor. Its loads faster than premiere, and as long as you don't mind being stuck in WMV or raw AVI format its blazing fast to resize/convert/etc movies.
